After the success of the Master System and the MegaDrive/Genesis, they saw a plethora of dodgy hardware releases such as the MegaCD, 32X, MultiMega*** and to some extent the Saturn...
And yet it seems that most of the current Dreamcast owners are indeed, former or current, owners of the old consoles. Sega has without a doubt managed to stay alive largely because of these devoted fans, who swore to the games that others looked down their noses at. The fans that believed that the Dreamcast would not be a flop like so many of the previous machines. And I use the term "flop" loosely, because most of the older Sega consoles have actually enjoyed success to a certain extent.
And now it seems that the long waiting period has been rewarded. The Dreamcast has time and time again proven itself worthy of a place in our homes. Constantly expanding its market share through games that are, as yet, unbeaten by other machines. Sure there are some stinkers amongst the great games, but isn't there always?
Sega owe a debt of gratitude to these faithful followers, and have started the shower of rewards with games such as Crazy Taxi, Virtua Tennis, Soul Calibur, Ferrari F355 Challenge, Shenmue, Metropolis Street Racer and many more.
However I fear that much more is needed to solidify the Dreamcast's position on the market. They can not afford to rest on their laurels. And unfortunately they are not known for their persistance. A change of plans is necessary. They need to show that they are not afraid to take on the Playstation and Playstation 2, which are already deeply embedded into the market.
I don't know how, but I do think that the loyal fans may not be as forgiving the next time around... That is, if there IS a next time...
*** Of those of you who haven't heard about the Sega MultiMega, it was a compact, portable combination of the MegaDrive/Genesis and the MegaCD, that unfortunately suffered a strong defeat and never actually made an impact.
