When you talk about the best bits of gaming, you talk about games like Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2 and Shenmue.
I have heard quite a lot about Shenmue. It something about a boy who comes into his house and finds his father rejecting a stranger who was asking him where the "Mirror" was, his father was killed by the stranger. That's pretty much all you know about your mission. You have to solve the mysteries like who was the stranger? What is the Mirror? And what did your father have to do with it. So, with not much background, you have alot to do. Good. It will take longer. The graphics are excellent as well. The difference between Shenmue and MGS2 is that Shenmue is more of an RPG with great graphics, and MGS is a shoot 'em up sneak 'em up game. You see,in Shenmue, you don't get an AK-47, C4's or Stun Grenades, which you get in MGS2.
MGS2 looks like a revolutionary game. The graphics are breathtaking, but different from Shenmue's. Shenmue's are...how can I put it...brighter?? Is that the word??? I'm not sure, I suppose it's 'cos they're a different genre of game. There is a new plot, I'm not sure exactly how it goes, but it ends up with main character Solid Snake on a large ship, carrying some kind of nuclear threat or something. The graphics are so detailed that you can see rain splattering on the ships decks, if something like a bottle gets shot, you can see a hole in it, things like that. You get extra weapons, and hopefully it will be a lot longer than MGS, which was a little short.
So, to sum up, both of these games are revolutionary, and I think Nintendo need to keep up, and make they're own, as I can't see Perfect Dark keeping up with any of these. If I get a DC, it will be partly 'cos of Shenmue, and I'm getting a PS2 partly because MGS2. That sums it up, doesn't it??? I think you get what I mean.
But which is better???? I don't think you can tell.
Thanks for reading, Ant.

Thanks Babylonian. Its usually a good sign when a big budget is used, nearly always in games anyway. (Toonstruck never sold, for some reason...)

Music in the first is very good, very atmospheric. Haven't heard music for MGS2 yet, but the soundtrack is being composed by Harry Gregson-Williams, who's worked on a number of Hollywood films - most notably Will Smith's "Enemy of the State"... so it should be excellent.

The whole game is being produced much more like a sci-fi action film than a videogame, and has an extremely large budget. It's shaping up to be a real corker, IMHO.

Nintendo will keep up, just look at the quality of games on the N64..Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Zelda64, ISS98, Mario64 all superb games. Mario64 was a revolutionary game when it was released, at the moment its just Sega and Sonys moment as their new machines are in the limelight.
Your right... MetalGearSolid2 looks like the game that will have us all begging for a Playstation2, and Shenmue looks great. However when Nintendo Releases their new Gamecube next year I'm certain they'll deliver the goods.
If theres one game company I admire its Nintendo, they always manage to keep releasing quality games on their systems even when others desert, take Donkey Kong Country on the SNES for example. Nintendo doesnt let its fans down, and Im sure quality games will keep comming out on the N64 up until and after the Gamecube is released.

Back to the future... of gaming :)

Shenmue has one of the most impressive soundtracks I have ever heard. Although I haven't heard that much of it, what I have heard is astounding! I hope they release the soundtrack over here...

Whats the music in MGS like, the first and second one?

They won't buy it anyway, and IGN thinks it looks nice, strangly.

I'm still here.

I'm thinking of originality though. Plenty of games where you can shoot people and sneak up on them. Not many where you can fully explore a world, with people acting out as they did in 1984, with weather exactly as it was in 1984 as well.(!)

A lot of time and effort has gone into the trilogy, and I hope it sells as well as mine will.

I'm not sure. Even though MGS2 is a sequel, it's still a completely different game, just with the same characters. They're sort of different games, aren't they??? And I hope you're not saying that just 'cos you're a DC fan. Of course you're not, though. Also, MGS has a year to improve, not finished yet.

I think the word here, is "epic". Shenmue is an epic game, 5 years in the making, looks beautiful.

But the thing about Shenmue is, you look at it, and know that you have been waiting a long time to play this game.

So Nintendo need an epic. Perhaps they could use Zelda?

Zelda is a legend, after all, but unless they can get a REAAALLLY good plot going, they have nothing.

At the moment, I say Shenmue is better than MSG2, because MSG2 is a sequel, and Shenmue is a very original game.
