People who write reviews professionally are some of the best writers around. They are mainly admirable to me because I am interested in what they are writing about :). Before you venture out and decide to buy a game, you check up on it first and read other people’s opinions on the game. The reviews are made from what other people think so he or she might love it and when you get home and play it you might end up throwing it to the back of your games cabinet.

If the review rates the game well, then the chances are you are going to rush down to your local games shop and buy it. But if the review is not great and really puts the game down then people will just ignore it. I don’t think this is fair because some games that are rated poorly by the reviewer could be great in other people’s opinions.

Some of the magazines you read give bias reviews, which is annoying because you can’t see what the game really has to offer. If it is a popular game and has been very commercialised then it will have outstanding reviews in every magazine. There are a few magazines that are great because they are not one sided and let the reader know exactly what the pros and con’s are.

Do you look to see if a game has a good review before you buy it? Are you put off if the game is not rated well? Naturally you are a bit discouraged if the game has a poor rating. Which is fair enough because you don’t want to go and pay up to £40 and end up hating the game.

Without reviews our games collection could be full of rubbish and we may even end up stop playing games consoles because we are put off by the rubbish games! :) If you about to buy a game and it had been given a bad review and rating would you still buy it? It is pretty certain that you will be extremely discouraged.

A solution to see if you like the game or not, is to rent it. Then you can really see for yourself instead of someone else’s opinion of the game.

Thanks for reading :)

what i do is read many reviews...and if they all give good scores then you know you're onto a winner...on the whole though the writers are correct...if they're mixed reviews then i decide whether i just like the looks of it and just bear in mind that i might be in for a disappointment

grrr...i hate it when people do that to get their word count up. anyway back to the topic....some of the reviews i read generally sway my way towards whether i buy the game or not, however i always watch out fo rthe biased magazines which simply just try to sell the game by telling you any old bollards just so you buy the thing.

And if i read a number of reviews i generally pick up on the points which are made consistantly and take it from that. in fact, this applies to what i was doing recently when researching about cricket 2002.

oh and er nice post yet again mate!

I agree, his word count was extremely low but now i average after copying a very big post. Also, he claims that it is his brother that keeps starting topics called "wot's the best game on the ps2" etc.

The trick is trying to find a source that fits in with your views. This obviously is never going to happen 100% of the time, but I think 80-90% of the time might be achievable. I rate PSM2 highly for the reviews, though having recently investigated 3 different Nintendo magazines, I was suprised at how poor they were. The Official mag has improved, but the others come across at a similar standard as say a second or third rate PS2 mag. There are plenty of good reviewers out there, but I am shocked at how bad some of them are. A lot of people on these forums could easily do a better job.

The problem with reviews is that they are one persons opinion of the game and it must be hard for a reviewer to get enthusiastic about a game that he just doesn't like the idea of.

I usually read a fair bit about games and normally have some idea of what I am likely to want to buy well in advance. Sometimes I have been looking forward to a game and then read a review which marks it down to something like 5/10 (which is still average!) and been a bit dubious about buying it. If I cant get hold of a demo I will generally go and rent the game to see if I think it would be worth buying.

before i buy a game i rent it first, if it's not to my likeing then i havn't lost much or if the game is too short and i complete it then the same applies. There are some games that i have ether bought or played on the PC and are been ported to PS2 that i know are good and i want to buy them because they are good, Half life and Deus ex are two.(my PC is degrading some what and i would rather spend money on my PS2 then upgrading it).
