So where should i start...
SPECTRUM & COMMODORE 64
Back in these revolutionary days of gaming, games machines were big, square ugly things attached to 80's tape players. I seem to remember the Commodore 64 being a lighter grey colour, whilst the original 48K Spectrum was a little black thing with horrible rubber keys. However, I was lucky (if you can call it that) enough to be the proud owner of the slightly newer dark-grey 128K Spectrum+2 with the tape player built into it. For its time, this was cutting edge stuff!
MASTER SYSTEM AND NES.
These consoles from Sega and Nintendo were gaming machines far superior to the above mentioned late 80's machines. Nintendo's NES resembled a large grey lunchbox whilst the Master System 1 looked like a big black wedge. The Master System 2 was a much more sleek machine. It was black and was much smaller and curvier than the Master System 1 and the NES.
MEGADRIVE AND SNES.
Nintendo's SNES retained its light grey colouring but became smaller and less boxier than its predecessor. The Sega Megadrive was one of the first consoles which could truly be described as sexy. It was relatively small sized, came in black and had a shiny ring around the cartridge slot. Its control pads were also the first pads to be more shapely and fit well into your hands. The Megadrive 2 update was also black, but was much smaller and squarer.
SEGA MEGA CD, 32X, SATURN
I thought i'd throw all these 'successful' consoles together. I personally thought the first Mega CD looked pretty cool sitting below the old Megadrive. However, the Mega CD 2 was a bit boring and without the motorised CD tray it lost some of its charm. The 32X looked a bit like some kind of alien as it stuck out of the Megadrive's cartridge slot. As for the Saturn, that looked pretty good and would still look nice today.
PLAYSTATION 1
The first Sony Playstation, to be honest, wasn't really that much to look at. It was reasonably smally sized and came in a beigy, light-grey colour. It was very distinguishable and well known. The machine was so popular that even your Granny would probably recognise a Sony Playstation. The later-released PSone gave new life to PS1 as it was extremely small and curvier than the first PS1.
NINTENDO 64
The Nintendo 64 was an attractive console. It was very curvy and sleek. Its only let down would be that it didn't look quite that sleek when it had a massive, old-fashioned cartridge sticking out of the top of it! Nintendo also later released the console in a range of colours, some of which were also see-through. There was even a special Pokemon N64! The control pads were quite revolutionary, with different hand positions depending on whether or not you were using the analogue joystick.
SEGA DREAMCAST
The ill-fated Dreamcast was another good-looking machine. It came in a whitish, light-grey colour and was quite compact. Like the Nintendo 64 it came with 4 control ports as standard. Perhaps the most revolutionary aspect of the Dreamcast was its control pads. These were fairly substantial in size and sported an analogue joystick as well as a slot for Memory Cards/LCD screens.
PLAYSTATION 2
When i first saw a picture of the Sony Playstation 2 i didn't quite know what to make of it. It must be without a doubt the most futuristic looking console around. It comes in black, which always looks better in my opinion as it goes well with the TV, VCR, etc... The PS2 comes into its own though when it is positioned vertically, as there is really nothing quite like it. And little things like the blue LED make it look especially cool.
MICROSOFT XBOX
The Xbox is also a very attractive console. Coming in black and with a green logo in the centre of the dominant 'X' shape on top of the machine, you'd be hard-pushed not to recognise this device as an Xbox. Its only downfall is its size. When put next to the PS2 it does look quite gigantic and even dwarfs some modern VCRs and DVD players.
NINTENDO GAMECUBE
Finally, we come to Nintendo's brand-spanking-new Game Cube. Nintendo's machine really breaks the mould and stands out from the crowd. Coming in purple and shaped like a cube (believe it or not!), the GameCube is the smallest next-generation console currently on the market. Its ultra-compact size and carry handle makes it easier than even to grab your console and take it round your mates house. Perhaps the main criticism of the GameCube is that in a world where the industry is dominated by older, more mature gamers, Nintendo's new machines looks a little bit too much like a toy, rather than a serious games machine.
TO conclude, I personally believe that when it comes to consoles, they should be sleak and sexy. This means being black, compact and blending in well with all your other TV and Hi-fi equipment. This means i prefer the PS2 in terms of looks. But don't take my word for it. Browse the links below and see what you think of games machines of the last ten years...

Note: I wont insult your intelligence by posting links to sites containing PS2, Xbox and GC pictures as i'm sure you've seen enough of these consoles lately to know what they look like.
