On Monday evening (19.20) one of my Freeola email accounts started receiving loads of spam type failures mostly from .ru domains.
'Undeliverable mail' 'Blocked by bulk email' 'Delivery status notification failure' etc. etc.
By Tuesday morning I had received around 500 of these. As the email account is pretty dormant I was able to delete it. The idea being that I could re-introduce it in a few weeks to see if the 'attack' had passed.
But today I've been contacted by another Freeola customer I look after and they too are seeing the same problem.
Neither of these email addresses are displayed on a website, so they haven't been 'harvested' in the normal way.
I have dozens of accounts and I only know of two so far that have this problem. I thought I would post here to make Freeola (and others) aware.
I have had a couple of emails (to my other accounts) delayed (by 3 days in one case) so I guess it's possible the Freeola mail servers are under some pressure?

Sorry I haven't got back to you earlier. I've been trying to find out exactly how this spam has got through.
It appears to have got past our Graylisting as it resent the mail after each initial bounce by our servers.
http://www.mcafee.com/us/threat_center/anti_spam/spam_top10.html shows that you a definitely not alone!
The spam seems to have originated from a Portuguese cable internet connection supplied by Netcabo (they're offering 30Mbps connections!). So it's probably a compromised machine and as the mail server receiving the emails just repeatedly bounces them back to the spoofed address then it is probably configured incorrectly as that is the incorrect way to deal with repeated sends to invalid mail boxes.
I have sent and abuse email to Netcabo and hopefully the spam attack will stop (and others will complain also).
Still not sure if you received my emails (I did receive a delivery receipt to my webmaster/co.uk message) as I've had no reply to the emails or this post today :¬(
As the 'mail delivery failures' spam from the spoofed 'reply' address have been coming in every minute or so (600+ this morning and hundreds during the day), it has made the email account unusable!
So I've had to remove the email account for the Freeola customer (web and adsl) I look after to give them some sort of service.
Hopefully this was a 'two off' (one of my accounts and my clients) but it's all rather strange.

I've just resent it: FAO Eccles: Spam attack in the subject.
In the past you've asked for emails to go to webmaster at freeola dot co uk this time you asked for com which is what you got!
