Once upon a time, the defining point of a console, was the quality of the games. The sheer pleasure of playing a game, of annihilating your friend without real blood shed. An experience of console GAMING...
These days it seems that the most talked about consoles, feature more or less useless gadgets like online capabilities, mail clients, chat functions, WAP (PS One), and more to boot...
Where did this come from??? Is the concept of a simple gaming console outdated??? Why do we need all these additions???
Let's get back to basics.
Build us a machine, with some good games, a good controller and some stunning graphics... And please, forget about all this extra bull...
Yes, well, consoles are meant to play games, but I'm sure the companies who make them are aware that the more people they can convince to buy their machine, the more money they will make from it through games (i.e. bigger userbase) Sony et al will add bits like DVD players and other things to encourage people who would not usually buy a games console to do so. Nintendo are brave and have my respect for not going down this path, but I'm sure it's inevitable that there are many consoles to come that will have extra features to tempt everyone.
I'm just saying that the console should not be considered a tool like the PC, but merely a plaything...
By the way, great name for Sony's next console...
The Sony Plaything.. :o)
Otherwise we wouldn't have Perfect Dark or GTA with 18 certificates. Even though I'm sure they both deserve 15's...
A lot of console developers today seem to focus too much on the evolution of the consoles, then the preservation of the essence of them.
The console is built for gaming, and in my opinion should not be used for anything else...
Now, some of you may argue that it's good that consoles have these features because a PC is vastly more expensive, but I believe that if you have £150+ to spend on a toy like a console, then a powerful tool like the PC is not expensive.
And let's face it, a console IS a toy, and should never be anything else.
Hey, thats the Gamecube!
:)
I do agree, though. If we go off the beaten path too much, we may lose all site of it, and get lost in the maze of addons.
All we need in the future, are modems, and broadband modems. That is all. Anything that makes playing games better is welcomed. Nowt else.
(Capcom and Square are making multiplatform multiplayer games, by the way. Resident Evil, from Capcom obviously, and Final Fantasy XI, a MMORPG from Square.)
