The same also applies to United's fans who eagerly watch every game anticipating a win, whilst proudly wearing the new 3rd or Away shirts in the comfort of their own home. Man United are the biggest football team worldwide, and that doesn't just apply in the business and finance sense. With supporters of every race from all over the world, and commentary of every United fixture in languages ranging from Canadian with their "Eh"'s, to the less fotunate people of Cape Town, South Africa, Manchester United and their players are simply HUGE!!
If you're a United fan and your friends are not, then with an almost instant reaction that you'll be called a 'Glory Hunter', and you'll strongly deny it. But aswell as this type of fan I believe there are many other types of Football Fans who support Man U, and I don't just mean the difference between the Scottish and the Indians.
The 'Local (TRUE) United fan'
Believe it or not but that huge majority of footie fans from Manchester are on the Blue Side, supporting City. It's very rare to find even one Mancunian who is very passionate about the Red Devils. It is such a rare occurence that you've got a much greater chance of experiencing Alien life-forms, or even winning The Lottery! And by being local to their team, there's a good chance that these guys will have been to Old Trafford and around to watch the Reds in action.
So the next time you're in Manchester, don't set your sights too high on finding a home-grown red. It just won't happen!
The 'Glory Supporter'
This is the type of fan who supports THE team of the moment, just because of their current success, giving the 'fan' the chance to boast to all his envious school-friends. A Glory Hunter (as they're also known) will have never actually been to see their side play, and will have definitley never been to Old Trafford! They may occasionally go to one away game, but they're only really waiting for the Cup Final tickets. And on the side of merchandise, it's the one and only way that this type of supporter will try to prove his loyalty other than by watching every live game on TV and constantly tuning into MUTV on Sky.
And when United do finally end their long-running winning streak, every Glory Supporter will soon surely rush off to Highbury, Anfield, or whoever the new big club are in England. They also EXPECT their team to win every game and everything possible! And whenever ANY squad player plays badly, they apparently 'MUST' be sold!
The 'My Mate Likes Them' Football Fan
As the title suggests, this type of supporter only supports United just to fit in with his friends, even when he may have not even a single clue about the beautiful game itself! They'll also try and copy other United fans untill they feel they know enough to support THEIR team on their own.
Any non-United fan (another rare occurence) may find this type of fan even more annoying than the typical Glory Hunter, and you would too if you had someone constantly echoing everything you do!
Watch out for them, and do not accept cheap immitations!
The 'I Like The Way They Play' Fans
Again, you could claim that these guys are only really interested in a team that plays well and is also rewarded well after all that hard work.
But then again, these fans (in their true form) DO actually exist! They may only watch football for what they can learn from the individuals, and therefore idolise the likes of Beckham, Giggs and van Nistelrooy of today. But many fans like this will also have interests in clubs like Arsenal for Vieira and Henry, Barcelona for Kluivert and Rivaldo, and an Italian club like Inter Milan for Ronaldo, Vieri and Zanetti.
But these 'supporters' are actually imposters when they ONLY stick to one, or THE, succesfull club(s) rather than go for a broader range of players.
Well, here is my list of what I believe are the 4 main types of Man United fans. I, myself, am probably a 'My Mate Likes Them' fan as it was one of my friends who got me into them, and there is no such thing as a true United fan from outside Manchester!
But it must be said that a majority of United fans are 'Glory Supporters', and that is a worrying thing for the future of supporting a football team.
So, what kind of United fan do you consider yourself to be??? C'mon, you can't read this and expect people to believe that you are possibly the only football fan in the country who does NOT support United!
And if you don't wanna answer that, do you feel that these so-called 'Glory Supporters' will on day ruin football as the 'glory teams 'change??
Even if Utd do have a lot of glory supporters out there (which they do) it aint the teams falt that they're good. So i would like to say that if there are any non Utd fans in this topic stop giving the team stick!
