Heres some stuff.

Eariler in the year, and at Spaceworld, Oddworld moaned about the programming difficulty.
Not long after that, it is known that they were approched by Microsoft.
Now they say it is a X-Box only product.

It does smell a bit off, doesn't it?

A lot of very valid points there, ifan.

I probably wouldn't be so dubious of the switch if there was to be a GameCube version, as that system is also supposedly "easier" to code for. But the whole idea of this sudden switch to X-Box exclusivity just reeks, IMHO.

The recent reports, screen shots and movies would point to exact opposites of Lorne Lanning and Oddworld Inhabitants claims. PS2 Ready 2 Rumble 2 screen shots are extremely smooth and jaggie-free, Summoner looks awesome, as do Red Faction, SSX, The Getaway etc. Have you seen the video clips on IGN for Madden 2001? It's like a TV program!

In my view, it all seems like a major cop-out and/or a cover-up for other reasons, which I suppose we'll never know about. The most puzzling thing is, why develop it for all this time? Surely these "shortcomings" must have been evident from the beginning?

The claims about effects being hard to achieve easily also seems to be a cop-out; others have managed, so why can't the Oddworld crew? Are they lesser programmers than other companies? If the switch is for aesthetic reasons, which is one claim, then why make the first two Oddworld games on PS1? Surely the N64 would have been better? After all, we can't deny that several N64 games look far smoother than PS1 games.

As I said above, when PS2 first appeared, and even up until recently, this company was singing its praises - saying how powerful it was. Just take this quote from the very same Lorne Lanning in issue 2 of PSM2:

"We've got some new stuff that'll blow people's socks off. You'll see real-time shootouts and gun fire, so visually dynamic and explosive that it'll feel like a John Woo movie. It's thanks to PS2 allowing lifelike lighting, scenery taken to new levels of believability, and animation on characters that mean they're smoother and more solid to the ground with their footsteps than ever before."

Now, I ask you, in your honest opinion, does that sound like a man who's p!ssed at the hardware? I say again: this situation stinks!

But let's face it... while some of us will be gutted at the loss of this title, it will affect Oddworld Inhabitants and sales of the game far more than it will affect PS2.

a lot of the games that are coming out are really impressive and so i dont't really think the playstation2 is hard to develop for , i just think that they have to get used to the machine before they do really inventive stuff:

Remember the original Ridge racer?
at the time it was released i was in awe at the speed and sharpness of the game.it was ground breaking for a console to have graphics like that.
once pictures and videos of gran turismo were out and about, everyone was saying that the replay's could be mistaken for a real life replay's of car racing, and still with graphics like gran turismo's it still played at a steady 30 fps.

This can be achieved on ps2,that's why developers should really give it a try before they give up. i bet that by the time metal gear solid 2 comes out here, lot's of games will have much more impressive effects and graphics (as well as sound) than the first wave of next-gen titles.

okay another example; does anyone remember the game "fade to black". That game came out quite early and also i played it for ages until i completed it, i thought that it was a really great game, with nice graphics , slick gameplay and the game had an unusual tension to it. Compare the game Fade to Black with metal gear solid.....exactly! there is almost no comparison.for example: the detail in Metal gear solid on the textures such as crates and buildings are very sriking and look great.fade to black had seemingly gouroud shaded polygons( for example just a wall with little detail on it like a shadow effect on it).

So i don't think that developers should just giving up because they find it difficult to code. munches oddeysey looks great, and the jaggiedness is very little from the videos i have seen. so what are oddworld inhabitants going to do now? stick with x-box for a while and then once a new more powerful system comes out- go to them?
Oddworld Inhabitants say that they want a system to realise their dreams first of all they say playstation2 is the answer and since microsoft threw around a few x-box dev kits, they turn around and say "x-box is more powerful, we can realise our dreams with this wonder machine"

For god's sake, you are programming a game on a gaming console. games are meant for enjoyment, to play and play again. not for moving to the next company just because they don't like jaggies----- if they want to realise their dreams then why don't they go make a film with all the effects ans look - no jaggies.

people buy games to play and to enjoy, not to count the amount of on-screen polygons.
i mean when sony first released the Playstation they weren't as in your face with specs as today, they just showed games- and they spoke for themselves. now with the advances in console and gaming power it is a good idea to show amazing polygon rates and power, and sony have done that very well, they have also shown the games too.

If they want to make it on x-box then that's a bad thing for all the people who have wanted to buy the munches oddeysey game. it may be a good thing for them since they can kill off the jaggies, and push more polygons.
seeing that they are now working with (or going to be )microsoftit will probably be a simulation game, with realistic movement of munch or abe and realistic jumping techniques that can vary from each one.

Playstation 2 is a fast and powerful bit of kit, so is the x-box and so is gamecube as well as dreamcast.
developers make fun,,long, games with great gameplay and graphics. you don't really need to kill off jaggies, and even if you had to it can be done. look at violitions
Summoner, it plays at 30 fps with full scene anti-aliasing.
so mr oddworld inhabitants don't tell me you can't do anti-aliasing on the playstation 2. i can also say that a lot of playstation 2 games will look a lot better than x-box and gamecube games once the developers have put in time and effort to get used to the systems programming methods.plus what would you rather play abe or munch with
a playstation 2 dual shock2 control pad or some dodgy tacky, plastic microsoft sidewinder varient.

i rest my case that oddworld made a bad move going to x-box, and that developers shouldn't be so negative about playstation2 and it's programming methods. Why don't they learn off all the major games bieng released for ps2 on launch date and beyond:tekken tag tournament, ssx, timesplitters, metal gear solid 2, the getaway, dead or alive 2:hardcore, i could go on.

so developers take note!

I have to agree with you there Babylonian.

Luckily I was never very interested in this game anyway. It looked beautiful but gameplay wise I dont think it would have been my cup of tea.

I think that the X-Box exclusivity gives the developers a good way out. They have probably been bought off by Microsoft who, it is already well known, are going to be attempting as many coups like this as possible in order to steal the PS2's thunder. Microsoft will do their best to sabotage the Sony launch as it is good business sense.

I personally think that the developers were probably finding their schedule tough to stick to and as a result the chance of moving to the X-Box and gaining another year is perfect. They get the extra time without loosing face and admitting that they have slipped by attempting a project that was too ambitious in the time scale.

Lets not accept all this hard to programme stuff at face value. There is always something going on under the surface and in this particular case I think that the Munch developers deserve a slapped wrist for taking the easy way out.

Bill Gates strikes again.

That man could BE the main villain in a Star Wars sequel.

Please don't be fooled by this man, the X-BOX will be great when it comes out, then 6 months later, an essential add-on will be needed to make it work properly. This add-on will be at a nominal price, and available for download at the official website.

Credit card at the ready people............

Aren't those guys supposed to be ex hippies? I guess they're used to selling out by now.
Not that I mind as I never got into abe.
Whats the developer called? I know they're based on the west coast of the usa maybee they're just being annoyingly patriotic as per usual?
What about all the code they wrote already, can I have it!

"They" being the Munch's Oddysey developers

Well, that is a sad story - I was really looking forward to that game.

The reasons behind it, though, stink - and it has overtones of laziness. Other developers are saying that they have no trouble with AA on the PS2, and in the screenshots I've seen, the graphics are some of the most jaggie-free I've seen.

Knowing they've done similar things before, I can't help but wonder if there's been - how shall I put it - a 'financial incentive' from Microsoft. There are two main reasons for my thinking this:

1. Originally they were claiming that PS2 was the first platform to offer them the power to create such a game.

2. All of a sudden, Munch's Oddysey is an X-Box 'exclusive'? What, no GameCube version either?

Am I the only one who smells a rat?
