I've recently gone back to a game I started a while ago, and have to say that taking a break in a game is one ofthe worst things you can do.

I started playing Majora's Mask an age ago, but it was my brothers game, and he wanted it back before I got very far. I recently got it back again, and continued from where I left off, only I couldn't remember much of what had gone before. An example of this would be the Zora that's floating in the water, anyway, I saved him, he said some stuff, then I got stuck, couldn't think what to do next.

Eventually I remembered the song of healing, and made some progress, but I wouldn't have been stuck for so long had I not have taken a long break from the game, forgetting that I'd ever learnt such a song.

Another example of this was when I used to play Banjo Tooie. The levels were so big, and I played it quite infrequently, I could never remember where I had been, and where I'd yet to look, so I found myself going around in circles, doing things I'd done before.

I guess this is why sports games are usually quite popular with me, as you can pick them up and play them whenever you like, and they're always the same. My hectic life means it's hard to doo any one thing for a long period of time, and I'm the kind of person that starts things, but rarely finishes them, getting sidetracked else where.

Maybe shorter games are aimed at me? I still like the idea of a long quest, but does anyone remember how long it took me to play through the 16 hours of Conker? I remember Strafex laughing at me, as many others completed it within a week.

Long quets will last me forever, so that's value for money, I suppose, but I can guarentee that I'll end up checking a walkthrough, simply because I've forgotten something from very ealry on in the game!

Maybe my memory is going, as I get older?

Taking short breaks of say a week are best, especially if you get a bit frustrated with them. Usually when you get playing again you'll see why you went wrong and actually complete the level or puzzle or whatever. Usually I get glued to games and can't phsically remove myself from them until I've completed it.

Taking breaks can be the best thing too, if they are just short breaks, say a day or two. It can get you ready to tackle that level you've been stuck on for ages from a new angle.

Of course, they can be bad if you have to rely on memory, like playing 'Guess Who' where you have to wait a month in between each question. Yikes!

Mind you, I had a break of 7 years from my Spectrum, and when I went back the swines had taken the graphics and sound and replaced them with blocky monochrome visuals and bleeps, I'm sure it was better than that when I last played on it...

Wow.... I haven't played GoldenEye or Perfect Dark at all this year, and they are still in-complete! I wonder how badly i'll suck at them whenever I pick up again where I last left off!! :S

Heh, and realising you had to play the Song of Healing to that Zora didn't really take much thinking for me! After all, when you spoke to him the word "HEAL" was highlighted in red!
You must have taken a VERY long break from this game!!
I'm just about ready to go into the Great Bay Temple now, and due to Ocarina of Time, I haven't played Majora's Mask for quite a while now.
I wonder what it'll be like when I do play it again, after finnishing Ocarina of Time???

"but does anyone remember how long it took me to play through the 16 hours of Conker? I remember Strafex laughing at me, as many others completed it within a week."

Uh-oh! How long exactly did it take you???
I've had it since x-mas and i've only killed that big Robotic hay-stack thing. I also haven't played it for a while, and I think my time is something like 5 hours already!! :S

I really dont like taking breaks in Gaming. I always forget what the hell is happening.

Its the same for me with Majora's Mask really. I've only played the game for about an hour, when i've gone back to it after a while I have completly forgotton what I am doing. Havnt touched that game in quite a while now. Only bought it becasue it was Gold...mmmmm....Gold Cart...

The only reason I take breaks in games is usually becasue they are crap. If I get a good game I will spend a very large proportion of my time completing it.

I think there should be multiple chapters in games so that, like a story, you can pause if you want to.

Or, if that's too much to ask, you could always go to a 're-cap' menu, where you could replay what you've done.

Games that give you hints (Jak and Daxter) are quite handy, but with such an easy game, you can complete it in a day or two.
