At the moment things seem to be the same as the last time that new consoles were appearing. The dreamcast is doing well, but sony is around the corner with a new console. Nintendo will soon be here with their gamecube and they will battle again until the people decide who they prefer. In 4 or 5 years this will happen again, with new consoles and maybe even microsoft having a second go. Computer games will still be under fire in the press and on tv for being bad and dangerous, and computer game tv shows will still suck!
I think that the hobby of playing computers and console games will not get any bigger than it already has, but it will not go underground again either, there will still be a lot of games sold but more companies will enter the picture and fight with the current ones to win a place in people's homes. The current trend for creating a games console with extra bits to intice people will go away and companies will concentrate on gaming again as their consoles are geared towards playing games. I dont think there will be only one system or one format in the future as this seems to be too complicated and stops the companies competing with each other.
Take the lounge as an example we have the PC, DVD player, TV, VCR, Satellite decoder, Hi-Fi etc. We are running out of space and the best way to regain this space is to roll some of these things in together. This is already happening in other areas (TV and Satellite decoders, TV's and VCR/DVD players etc) and in the future this will move into gaming. Why carry a Gameboy and a mobile and a plamtop computer?? Surely all of these can be rolled in together!! At the very least I imagine that Nintendo will team up with some mobile phone company and produce the mobileboy. A phone with a screen that contains a gameboy advance chip and thus can play gameboy advance games. Takes up less space and does two jobs.
This is the future and Sony have grasped this idea. People want on-line games and Sony will soon join Sega and the X-Box in exploiting this desire. They will then work out some way to supply advertising in their online games or sell services to the gamers who now find the web open to them. Gaming companies like all other companies want to make money and the internet will allow them to do this.
Multipurpose gadgits (including consoles) are the way of the future and if you dont like it I am afraid you better go hide!!
