1. Have you fed the cat?

Have you fed the cat?
She's lounging on the couch
And looking jaded
Watching us fight for the fifth time tonight.
She's not purring when you stroke her;
Those are tears, can't you see?
She doesn't give a damn about you or me:
We just feed her more then the others do.
So have you fed her? Have you?
If you don't then she'll leave you
Because she doesn't care for me.
I just fed you more than the others did.
But no, not today, because food isn't free
And that's the reason why you're leaving me.

2. Before

Pine for me like you did before
Hang on my words
Laugh at my jokes
Kiss me when I forget my lines
Just love like you did before
Before our battle, before the war.
Before
Before our hearts grew cold
And my words are boring
And my jokes are bad
And I'm reading a soliloquy
In a play for one.
Kiss me before I forget my lines.
Kiss me before you're gone.

3. Forgetting you

Your eyes are poems
But I haven't written them yet
They came to me too late
After you had gone.
What colour are your eyes?
Are they Green or Blue?
It's important for the rhyme scheme
In a poem I'm writing for you.
I know I'm not spontaneous like him
I'm dull and unimaginative
Until the poems comes
But they came too late
And you were gone.
What colour were your eyes?

(I wrote this as a song rather than a poem. The last verse is heavily based on a song whose title currently eludes me. Maybe I'll put the finished recorded version online oneday)

And outside,
The sky is falling.
Theres people dodging raindrops
Please say you won't cry.
I wont blame you.
But lord knows I won't blame myself.
Theres something wrong but just can't see.

Inside
My mind is changing
My fears are burning brightly
Trying to escape
I can hear it
Crying out to escape from the pull
Screaming out so scared that we'll fall

You walk before me
But lord knows I can't follow
You walk behind me but I don't think I can lead
You walk around me
Please don't walk around me
Because you know how dizzy I get

Good stuff.

It wasn’t the fighting that wore me down
Everyone has rough patches
It wasn’t feeling like I was an observer
Everyone feels like that at times
It wasn’t even the times I felt like a fool
For daring to get upset about things
That I had every right to

I lost count the number of occasions
That I held my tongue for the sake of a quiet time
Despite how that made me feel about myself
It wasn’t even those moments when I had to
Listen to what I was doing wrong and
How I never understood
Even though I know you better
Than you know yourself

The countless times I had to listen to you
Sob and try to explain why you said what you said
All the times I surrendered my identity
To tell you
“It’ll be ok”
“You’re strong”
“You’ll make it, just you see”
Just to have to ask you if you could
Hold me and tell me things would be ok

To try and always understand your viewpoint
And to bury mine in case it disagreed with
Your version of events and we fought again
To choke on words of anger and to try and find
Supportive words
To know that I was being too nice
About it all when logic dictates that I should
Shout and scream at you
Because that’s how you deal with problems

And it wasn’t those times when
I couldn’t try and tell you how sad I felt
Because it conflicted with something else
You were doing
It wasn’t being made to feel like an obligation
To be fitted in around other things when you
Felt you had the time to be there for me

No
None of these things are why
We now pretend we’ll stay “friends”
I could handle all of that stuff
Standing on my head
It was smashing myself to pieces
Against a wall of indifference
That finally made me wake up
And escape with my mind intact
