When Sega first unveiled the Dreamcast, after It's floped Saturn, Sony immediatly went to work. They couldn't have another company hyping a console which would go unrivalled by Sony for a while, this would mean Sega would win over the consumers which gave Sony its success in the video games market to start-off. If Sega achieved the success Sony did it would spell certain doom for their up and coming PS2. With no other companies in the areana to take care of they immediatly barraged potential DC buyers with PlayStation 2 propaganda, making them wait for this 'better' console. This is the reason why the Dreamcast went under, and there is virtually no denying that. People who say there were no good games for it must have had their eye-lids stapled down. There was Sonic, Phantasy Star, Crazy Taxi, Shenmue and Skies of Arcadia.
But, of course, the 'non-hardcore' gamers didn't see these titles, bar Crazy Taxi and Sonic, so opted for the PS2 instead. When the PS2 came out there was a huge commotion. Advertising was thrown everywhere you looked and has been done ever since.
But Sony seemed to be in trouble. It could see on the horizon what looked to be a beast. I'm talking about the X-Box. What were they going to do? Their Playstation 3 was just an idea and by the time the X-Box would come out the PS2 would be old-hash and Microsoft has enough money to blow Sony out of the water advertising wise(something Sega didn't have). So what do Sony do? They go and say that the X-Box's release in Japan has made them re-think the predicted release date for the PS3. So why should people go and buy a X-Box if the PS3 is on the board? Then before the release of the X-Box and the GameCube in Europe Sony say the PS3 will be 1000x more powerful than the PS2 and even talks about what consoles after that will offer. I for one can see the same underhanded tactics being used again. In the past companies like Nintendo and Sega would push each other, not try to destroy each other. When Nintendo got Mario Sega thought up Sonic, when the Mega-Drive got a CD-drive Nintendo put one into development, Nintendo planned a modem for the N64 in the form of the 64DD the Dreamcast had a modem.
In this respect it seems that the video gaming world is taking a turn for the worse. It is being re-born were the games each console has are no-longer order of the day, but clever marketing tactics and money to throw around are becoming recognised ways of waging war. This means that many amazing games on other platforms other than the 'lead' console will not get the recognition they deserve because corporations are drowning out the sounds of other companies achievments. I personally hope that it will not become this bad and each console will have equal publicity.
If one rises abouve the others and the other 2 are pushed out of the console market (ie Sega) then the dominant company will be able to set high prices and have no competition.
If Microsoft had not come along with the Xbox the GC price would have not been dropped to £130 (or so i think)
so its best if things stay more or less the same.
i've seen many-a-person say "Oh, wow, it looks really good!" after seeing the X-Box advert.
Then I'm going "Hello! There's nothing on there about what the console's like you moron"
But anywho, I think the advertising pretty much dominates which consoles people buy.
Filthy casual-gamers are going to buy which ever has the nicest looking ad.
They should all be hung,
From a suspension-brige
With razor-wire
Covered in blood
Over shark-infested waters
Filled with acid
(Think happy thoughts. I'm not going on the medication again)
