The Future of Console Gaming - what does it have in store?

Well over the months, countless innovative ideas and proposals have been mentioned on these forums, and as interesting and exciting as all the predictions are - forget them all!
Because I'll tell you what the future of console gaming has in store for gamers....

****FREE CONSOLES****

Yes, you heard me right.
I predict that the next-generation of videogame consoles will retail at ZERO Pounds, Dollars, Yen, Euros, whatever.

We all know that the current three console manufacturing companies (Sony, Nintendo, MicroSoft) make a substantial loss on every console sold, and that they make their profits on software and peripheral sales - so why not just give their consoles away for FREE?

Because at the end of the day, all the console companies want is to get their hardware into as many bedrooms and beneath as many television sets as is humanly possible.
Once there, they know people will go out and buy the software, and buy software, and buy software - and that is how they generate profit.

Just imagine if MicroSoft released the XBOX at a price of zero pounds and zero pence - how many consoles would have left the shelves in the first week?

So what d'you think?
WILL THE FUTURE OF CONSOLE GAMING = FREE CONSOLES?

Instead of naming their next console "PlayStation 3", Sony should name it "PlayStation Free".
They give the console away free whilst at the same time promising free roaming do-what-you-want-gaming - i.e. online gaming, massive interactive gameworlds, etc.
If they did this, they would not only dominate the future of gaming, they would obliterate all over hardware competition.

I don't believe that we will ever see free consoles, though it would be a nice thought.

The main console companies are just not THAT eager to get everyone to have their machine, however much they seem to be lowering the pricing of their machines. At the moment they are just playing chicken.

The prices of consoles are falling day by day - we've seen this just recently - so it could happen, but only if the customer had to buy four games when picking up the console.

To a certain extent this is true. But too many people would 'buy' the console for the sake of it, and just buy one or two games for it. It would take extraordinary courage, luck and acute sense of timing for it to work, especially if there are competitors. Maybe a token price around £50 would do this: nobody's going to waste £50 and not buy games, but it's still cheap enough to encourage everyone interested in gaming. Still though, an interesting point and an angle I've not seen approached in these forums before. Good post.
