Yep, despite the obvios joke which will be thrown at me about the sub-standard quality of the SPL and the Scottish league systems in general, Scottish football is on the brink of collapse, thanks to the greed and lack of patriotism shown by the Old Firm.

Earlier this year the 12 clubs in the SPL decided to knock back a 4 year contract offer from Sky worth £50 million for the TV rights for the SPL. The reason for doing so is that the SPL were in negotiations and at an advanced stage of planning to set up their own pay-per-view TV station SPL TV. This would be similar to the likes of MUTV, but cover the entire SPL. However when it came to the final vote, Rangers and Celtic used the fact that any rule changes to the SPL require an 11-1 majority to scrap the plans as they said it would not be financially viable.

In short, Rangers and Celtic are desperate to leave the Scottish league set-up and join either the English premiership or the Pheonix league. The Premiership have blatantly said no to Rangers and Celtic, without any official moves being made, but the Nationwide league clubs have decided that it would be a good idea for Rangers and Celtic to play with them, especially as they are a bit skint at the moment too.

Due to this, the other 10 clubs in the SPL have decided to do Rangers and Celtic a favour and resign from the SPL with two years notice, effectivly leaving Rangers and Celtic alone in the SPL. It's quite obvious that the Old Firm will be playing in another league of thei own by then anyway.

Anyway, the consequences of these events have seen massive blows to clubs already. Motherwell FC have been put into administration by it's chairman who is looking to sell as soon as possible, but it's unlikely he will find a buyer for a club which is roughly £12 million in debt and not recieving any TV revenue for the forseable future. Other clubs have also been holding their AGM meeting recently, and it turns out that possibly only one club is Scotland is actually operating at a profit at the moment, however they are still severly crippled by debt repayments.

So, the future looks bleak for Scottish football all round, maybe the Standard of the national team will improve if we let pub team player however, they can't be quite as bad as the diddies Berti Vogts had running around chasing the French.

The Scottish league is certainly in a spot of bother at the moment but then so are some of the Nationwide clubs because the whole ITV incident has cost clubs quite a bit of money and some are to small to deal with it.

It is a shame but whose fault is it? Rangers and Celtic want to do better and staying in the SPL will be an obvious stumbling block. The other clubs need more money and I can't see any way of them getting it. Turmoil is indeed the correct word because I heard that Rangers and Celtic joining the English leagues is not option according to UEFA.
