Men!! How many more times do we have to sit at our computers watching yet ANOTHER macho, muscled hard man, running around the screen, blasting the brains of zombies and enemies but still having time to gel his hair and direct a quick, quirky pun towards the camera…In the world of gaming, we are immersed in testosterone-fuelled action, where the hero will often think he’s finally met his match in a beautiful and talented woman…then what happens? It was all a front!! She isn’t THAT strong and valiant, she ends up getting caught by the enemy and held to ransom, all because she THOUGHT she was tough enough. Our hero with the six-pack then will swoop down to save the fair maiden and automatically win her eternal love, and they live happily ever after….blah blah blah.…The only thing I have to say to this pathetic display of a testosterone trip is, BAH!! Where’s the women in this so-called equal world of gaming?? I’ll tell you where they are…they’ve squeezed themselves into tight, leather costumes and are running around the pixel world with massive guns, stopping every now and then to check their profile or allowing the gamer to have a disputably tasteless birds eye view down the front of their outfit. Don’t get me wrong, I like to see a strong, determined, extraordinary woman kicking butt and saving the day…but is that the ONLY women who appear in games? Take Silent Hill for example…Harry Mason, an ordinary widowed parent. He is ORDINARY! He’s thrust into this nightmare world unwillingly and all he wants to do during the frantic and terrifying duration of the game, is find his daughter and go home. How about Leon Kennedy from Resident Evil 2? He’s an ordinary kinda cop, first day on the job, and again, he’s thrown head-first into a terror-filled adventure. My only question is….where’s the ordinary women? If it’s not Joanna Combat, Lara Croft, Aya Brea or Regina thingy, leaping around in cat suits with perfect hair and perfect aim, it’s Rinoa Heartilly or another equally pathetic wuss, fainting at the sight of blood and managing to get herself captured by the enemy for the 3rd time during the game!
Now I realise that we do have a couple of examples…Claire Redfield from Resi Evil 2 is one such example. But how about an RPG with a NORMAL, everyday woman, thrust unwittingly into the action…having to LEARN to use her weapons and just because she’s seen one before, to still FEAR the enemy she encounters. How come they all turn into hardened, fearless fighters after the first battle?

Oh yeah, and like the bleeders said, you shouls put a copy of eberything related to what you have done on the game/Music Cd, into an evelope and get everyone that had somehting to do with it sign the back, write what it is on the outside so yyou know what it is if you take it to court and when the letter comes back it will have a stamper date on it from the post office, it has become very useful to me, and is somehting to do on rainy days.

Strangely enough I don't knwo many GAMEs like thast, lots of films, but my list of games are all cartoons and shooting, not much romance, Goldneye has a woman but shes not tough, and she doesn't think so either, she just has an attitude.

I found The Man Who Knew Too Little funny.

Is there something wrong with me?

I think that what games need is an anti-hero. Someone who would run away from danger but cant because they have some reason to face it. They would still run away at any moment though, but the evil keeps finding ways to keep them there. Perhaps they are male and along comes this beautiful woman who they like and just follow around, but she is into danger and gets him into all kinds of troble.
I dont know, it is difficult to come up with something where the main chracter isnt a hero, there are films that pull it off, but not many. Ash from Evil Dead is the only one I can think about at the moment.

I think you missed the point...I'm not talking about beautiful women with perfect bodies...I'm talking their temprement and personality...everyone's a hero. Fear is dissolved as soon as the first encounter with the enemy is made. Would me or you be like that? Would we enter a nightmare world and after the first half hour become a battling hero? I think not...

AngelWing, The women you are referring to are created by what a programmer has in there mind, what they want her to do. However the argument is the same of the men, how many of the main characters are ugly, overweight, slobs sucked into an exciting adventure and forced to overcome their lazy tendencies as they save the world. The computer game era is riddled with cliches and this is an unfair representation of society. The characters are always overly beautiful, with crisp good looks and courage, and valor.

Who does everyone think is the ugliset main cahracter in a game?

When will there be a game where a fat, ugly bloke shows cowardice and runs in order to save himself as the whol of a nation is wiped out? most probably never, because who would want to control a character like that? Not many people.

Remember, don't forget to make a copy, sign and date it. Otherwise what's stopping the developers 'stealing' your idea?

Hey, if you want things changed why don't you design a game on paper and send it to one of the games developers.

You never know they might buy the rights to make it (make sure you send a colour copy) and you may even get recognition as a games designer if you are lucky!

Anyway a lot of multi-format games magazines have the addresses of all the games developers in them (e.g. gamesmaster)

By the way gamesmaster conned all the PS fans! They said in issue 99 they were going to be giving free mem-cards for PS in issue 100 but they didn't! HAHA! (Glad I'm a Nintendo fan!)
