Firstly, we have the battle system. It is turn based, and that generally makes battle slightly boring. 3 (or 4) members fight individually in turns and use various commands to try and kill an enemy. It's a good formula but the problems include that there is not excitement and that there is no variety. Now the latter may seem slightly narrow minded but after you know all about the character you use battles become more a chore than an adrenaline rush (have any FF battles been adrenaline rushes? Still...). This should not be the case. I don;t think they should scrap the current system but they should modify it. Take Grandia 2 for an example. It has a similar system yet it has variety, like postioning of characters round the battlefield and also better camera angles. Perhaps they could use this as a raw framework, and build on it so much to make it their own.
Secondly, the likeness of characters through each game. I know that some characters must link to make the games sequels, yet sometimes it's uncanny
First of all, Yuna and Selphie. When designing charaters you want originality and personality (cough cough Sqaull! cough cough) so maybe making the two characters so alike visually was a mistake. Then we have Tidus and Squall, whi have completely different personalitys, which is good, but they have very similar looks, which is bad. And even the names of places is repeated. We need originality! GF's, Aeons, Eidolons, Materia! Basically all same named monsters. Maybe we need some new things.
My friend noticed that all monsters were similar and not being a FF fan himself he said it was like Pokemon!!! And that is beginning to become worringly true, as very few new 'monsters; are ever being made for the new game!
And next we have the actual random battles. Now random battles are good and all, but having to go into a completely different screen to get to them after an eventually-quite-boring screen falling apart sequence we enter yet another battle. Thankfully, FF11 would appear to have cured this,
but it only would appear. Keep eyes open for this.
So there's my little round up of fiddles and changes that could be made. FF is one of the best games around, and with a couple of adjustments, its could BE the best game around
And infact, it could steal Zelda's crown......
Yet its quite possible...Watch this space
