Alot of games lack in plot and character expansion, but yet game creators still tell us we are going to get clever, filmlike games.
Take MGS2. I had to play the game twice to fully understand the plot. Some of you clever people may have understood it straight away, but us mere mortals have to actually have things clearly pointed out to us. I found it hard to understand if the whole game was a training exercise, or if it was real. Why Raiden? the guy is nowhere near as good as Snake, so why did they choose him for the project? If the game's creators are trying to tell us that we need to pass on information to our future genertation, then they could have easily had Solidus sit Raiden on his knee and tell him about the birds and the bees.
MAX PAYNE has a simple enough plot, but at the same time the creators have still tried to add twists to the game which just make it pathetic. Why on earth would the police think Max would kill his only informant? Are they stupid?
I know these are just games, and should not be taken literally. I understand that nothing in games can be real, because games are not real. It would be helpful though, if game creators stopped trying to be Hollywood screenwriters and just give us straight forward, enjoyable games. Games such as Mr.Mosquito, which a friend showed me the other day and it looks great! Simple game, just try and drain people's blood. No complicated twists or sub-plots, just simple instructions to a game that you can play, enjoy, and forget about until you play again.
If game creators are going to insist on giving us games with a plot then they should at least think about it before they make the game. I will give credit to games such as Resident Evil and Tomb Raider, because you knew what was happening and why. The game had a beginning, a middle, and an end. In my view games are meant for enjoyment. You cannot enjoy something which you do not understand, as you will become bored and lose interest and sometimes this turns into hatered.
If the future of gaming is a half bothered attempt at making 'playable films' then i think i will not bother buying a gamecube, i will sell my PS2 and my PC. This will then leave with an alternative to find other forms of pleasure outside my house. Maybe i will buy a piano or something, or even take up a sport.
