The Call of Duty Series has always astounded gamers for its realistic war feeling. So is the 4th instalment of the game another step in the right direction? The game is titled ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’ as you may well assume the game is based on modern war. With an array of weapons and realistic visual content could this be what all FPS games should look up to? Let’s see…

Graphics

The game has really taken advantage of the PS3’s huge capability and is visually beautiful. There are various cut scenes throughout the game that really make you appreciate how much effort has gone into this game. Every detail that you would hope to be taken care of is, from the characters face to bullet holes through surfaces, it’s all very tidy.

There is one scene during a mission where you are a sniper that you will get an insight into what the PS3 is really capable of. A helicopter comes crashing down and stops within inches of you, the realism that the game can produce becomes apparent throughout the game.

Gameplay

First things first you must complete the training course in order to proceed to the next mission. This is where you set the standard for the game ahead; choose from 4 levels of difficulty, veteran being the toughest. It really will test your skills!

Like many war based games it is based on you having to complete missions. These range from seeing how stealthy you are as a sniper to controlling an array of destructive weapons on board a friendly helicopter. The missions are well thought out and when playing on veteran mode test the capabilities of the finest gamers.

As you progress through the game you will encounter various sets of weapons to help you along the way. You can also pick up weapons from the enemies dead corpse which is a nice touch. From rocket launchers to sub machine guns there are plenty of ways to cause destruction. The controls for the game are very well set up and after a few attempts you soon master them.

The only flaw I could really find with the game is the length it takes to complete all of the missions. Around 5-6 hours to complete the game depending on the difficulty you set. The ride along the way is one that will leave you craving more, which is always a great sign for a game.

Multiplayer

From this part of the game you are able to play against friends in the split screen option with up to 4 people playing. It’s quite fun and there are various different game modes you can compete in. To be honest if you are going to play the multiplayer side of the game there is only one option for you, online mode. From here you can pit your COD skills to the ultimate test against the best of the best.

The online mode offers a chance to level up your character, as well as customizing your own weapon kits. There are also various challenges that you are able to complete. It’s very easy to spend countless hours playing the online mode without even realising how long you’ve been sitting there. Only after you’ve finished for the night do you realise you’re not actually at war, although slightly shell-shocked!

Sound

With all other aspect of this game neatly presented, does the sound live up to the standard of the other parts within the game? In short, yes. You will find yourself so involved within the game that the sounds within really immerse yourself into it. As you run through war torn buildings with bullets flying past, grenades blowing up to your left and right and machine gun fire chasing you, you really appreciate what this game has to offer.

The Sum Up

If you are into first person shooters then look no further, this really is one of the best FPS games I have played in a long time. With mouth watering visuals and addictive game play this game has all the ingredients needed. This really is an epic game, well worth the money in my opinion. The online multiplayer will keep you hooked until the next instalment of the COD series makes an impact on our gaming experience…
