Throughout the years Nintendo have never stopped using their imaginative brain to churn out great characters after great characters. It’s because of Nintendo’s great game-producing conveyor belt that these well-known characters have been spawned, and it isn’t about to be turned off yet, what with Nintendo celebrating their tremendous character design with an accumulation of their all-time characters within Smash Bros. Melee. Here below are the characters I think have made the biggest impact on Nintendo’s success:
MARIO
He’s a year old who has been through it all. As well as his main adventures when he was usually found rescuing the easily kidnapped Peach from Bowser’s determined grasp, he has shown his multi-talented skills. He’s a plumber, yet he has joined with many other Nintendo-exclusive friends to take part in a tennis tournament, a golf championship, and he has jumped into the exciting world of grand prix kart racing. It’s not all good for Mario though, he was the bad guy in his first ever game, the arcade Donkey Kong game. Mario has also been missing in “Mario is Missing” and needed the help of Luigi to find him.
Mario has been influential for Nintendo as their mascot and his game franchise is the most successful of all time.
LINK
Nintendo’s second most important character, Link had the leading role in the game proclaimed by many as the best game ever. I am of course talking about “Ocarina of Time”. Link, along with Mario, was the character who catapulted the N.E.S to success, especially with “The Legend of Zelda” and later with “The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Adventure” both being 2D “bird’s eye view” games involving dungeons and many artifacts to collect, the main theme of the whole Zelda series.
He later starred in “A Link to the Past” on the S.N.E.S and “Link’s Awakening” on the GameBoy. Ocarina of Time’s sequel “Majora’s Mask” was also a success along with the new idea of sister games on the GameBoy Colour named “Oracle of Seasons” and Oracle of Ages”.
As you can see, Link has embarked upon many adventures and despite the stories not linking well, the individual plots have been very interesting and added to the games’ fantasy quality. Zelda games always have a lot of secrets stashed away and this propels them to greatness. Link is a crucial character for Nintendo.
DONKEY KONG
This great hairy brute, like Mario & Link, is yet another ingenious Miyamoto invention. He didn’t have a great start to his career, thanks to an unsuccessful relationship with Nintendo’s mascot, Mario, as they were bitter rivals in Nintendo’s first few titles.
Unfortunately, Miyamoto was forced to deprive himself of his third successful creation, as there simply wasn’t enough time on his hands to work on an adventure for him Link and Mario. At this point DK was handed over to Nintendo’s first loyal second-party company, Rare. This was no mistake, because as we all know, Rare went on to create the fantastic, secret-mini-game-filled Donkey Kong Country. However, Rare seemed to get slightly bored with poor old DK, because the next few Donkey Kong instalments failed to feature the Kong himself, as he was shunted back to being the ‘Kong in distress’, captured and in need of rescue. The rescuers were Diddy & Dixey (sp?). (On the old hand-held systems even before the GameBoy, I believe, Donkey Kong had to be rescued, you see, and maybe Rare thought he’d play a better role in that position.
But, like Link & Mario, he’s had the honour of showing off his fighting skills in Smash Brothers, his tennis skills and his golf skills; not to mention being the joint start in Donkey Kong 64, along with other new character inventions, such as Lanky Kong and Chunky Kong.
At this point, I think it’s clear to see just how important Shigsy has been to Nintendo’s development, as he has these three successful, Nintendo-exclusive characters.
YOSHI
Nintendo’s very own green dinosaur is a very good accompaniment for Mario in his various adventures. He first appeared in “Super Mario World” where Mario could ride on him and use his extremely long tongue to eat enemies whole.
Yoshi later co-starred with Baby Mario in “Yoshi’s Story” on the S.N.E.S in which he had to protect the defenceless baby. The N64 sequel wasn’t as successful as it was too short.
Yoshi has lately been part of the gang taking part in sports like “Mario’s Golf”, “Kart” and “Tennis”. Yoshi gives the Mario games an animal character and adds to their experience.
PEACH and ZELDA
The Princesses of Nintendo’s games. Peach seems to have a tendency to be captured by Bowser. Mario has had to rescue her in practically every adventure he goes on. She has taken part in every Mario sports title and she’s going to make an appearance in SSBM.
Zelda is the princess of the games with her name on, even though she hasn’t starred in any of them. Despute this she is important to the Zelda stories. She was particularly important in “Ocarina of Time”. Like Peach, she has also been detained a couple of times, yet she still plays a part in Nintendo’s character success. She also makes a surprise appearance in SSBM.
BOWSER
Yes, last of all is Bowser, the villain of Nintendo’s gang. Everyone has to have a villain. Sonic has Robotnic, Link had Ganondorf and Mario has Bowser, and he’s usually the culprit behind the devilish plans that formed Mario’s eventful career. However, he isn’t the only baddie, which is good because otherwise it’d get boring. So along came Wario and, very late, Waluigi. Yet Bowser is still behind the majority of evil events that occurs in the land of Mario & friends, because he seems to pop up in any awkward place. He’s already made his Gamecube debut in Luigi’s Mansion, where I’d of thought he’d least likely to be. Why couldn’t it of been Waluigi, hm? It seems as though whenever a baddie has to be behind something, Nintendo just stick Bowser in. Something that I admit should change.
So there’s who I think are the most recognisable characters in all of Nintendo’s cast, and they are just one of the reasons as to why I love Nintendo so much.
I don’t know about you lot, but it’s the fun they bring with them that makes the games they star in so enjoyable and appealing.

10 days to go people!
I wonder where Donkey Kong would be now if he wasn't part of the Rare team now???
And as for Zelda, I don't actually think she's done too much except help Shigsy with a game name for Link to star in, and also help Link himself.
You don't neccesarily think of Peach or Zelda (the character) when you think Nintendo, it is more likely to be Mario, Luigi or Link.
And when you look at the characters of SSBMelée, I wonder if any of the ones you've already mentioned will soon fade away from the light like those 2 Snowball Bros. or whatever they're called??
Highly ulikely I know, but you just have to wonder. And it'd be more likely to happen if new characters popped out of Shigsy's head.
But who could ever replace Mario as Nintendo mascot!?? Shigsy!?
Fox McCloud is important, I suppose, but not as important as the others, and as you said, not as old.
I reckon it's the type of post that simply ain't that replyable :D
