Firstly make sure you want to go to all the bother of getting a PCI 3d card. It might make more sense upgrading the motherboard to one that has an AGP port as this will give you more options for which 3d card you buy.
(PCI graphics cards are few and far between, SR still stocks some also maybe a good idea to look for 2nd hand 3d card as it would be cheaper)
Secondly, if you definately want to just upgrade 3d card, make sure you have a spare PCI slot.
Thirdly, get a friend who knows quite a bit about computers to help you.
--If you can't then this is what I would do to upgrade 3d card on an onboard system. Go into your BIOS look for something called "Integrated peripherals" (the name varies accross different bios'). In this section it should have info about your video and sound both being enabled. Simply disable the video card. Go back to the main bios menu and hit "Save and exit". Your computer will load up in VGA mode. Shut it down, add PCI card to motherboard, attach monitor to the PCI card. Switch on machine and install drivers for new PCI card.
I'm sorry if this is a little sketchy but I am doing it off the top of my head. No doubt I have forgotten something but at least it gives you an idea. Oh, by the way disabling 3d card will not disable your sound.
