Actually, this is how it REALLY happened. During the months of November and December I had continually nagged my mum and dad for a Playstation for Christmas. My mother kept saying "Its too expensive" and "£300!!...how much?!". Still, i kept asking in a Bart Simpson-esque way. ("Can I have a Playstation for Xmas", "Can I have a Playstation for Xmas", "Can I have a Playstation for Xmas", etc....) Eventually they gave in and two weeks before Christmas i forced my mum to ring up and order one, making sure i heard her place the order so that she wouldn't try to fob me off with a Snes or (heaven forbid) an N64!
Over the coming years I regularly bought games at roughly £40 a time. Fastforward to 2002 and I decide to buy a next-generation console. I choose to buy a PS2. I get the PS2 with GT3 and MGS2, take it home and play on it far too much and love every second. (we've all been there)
A couple of weeks later and i spot my old PS1. Its as if its looking at me saying, "You never play with me anymore." So i think to myself, i dont need the PS1 (the PS2 is backwards compatible) and most of its 20 odd games i dont play anymore. Therefore i decide the best option is to sell the console and games and use the cash to buy some new games for my PS2.
Before doing this, i wondered how much money i'd get. I thought to myself, 'I spent £300 on the console and 20 games at an average price of £35.... thats about £1000'. I took the unit and games to a local games dealer which buys, sells and exchanges games. Basically, the shop owner looked at me as if i was stupid before telling me my PS1 was worth £25 and the games were worth between £1 and £4 each! There is no justice in the world. Begrudgingly i accept the deal and use the cash to get two new PS2 games. Hows that for an investment? An £80 return on £1000 spent. James Bond's opponent in a casino would struggle to lose that much!
Anyway, I guess you can't put a price on the hours of the gaming pleasure i enjoyed over the years.
Anyone else had any similar experiences?
Thanks for reading.
