The name Champions League. Look at the Quarter Finalists from this year. Only 4 teams won their respective leagues. Spain have had excellent representation in the last two Champions Leagues.
It's obvious that a change is necessary. The winner of the Champions League would have played about 19 games. That, to me, is far too many, especially with league and domestic cup commitment.
A possible remedy would be to scrap the first group phase and have a knockout round to reduce the teams for the group section. There are many possibilities, but one thing is for sure. SCRAP THE NAME CHAMPIONS LEAGUE!

if they did scrap the name the champions league what would you like it to be called
i like the name because only the champions are in it
Newcastle who finished fourth this season get to enter at the 3rd round and this makes me feel sorry for the welsh and irish teams.
But it all depends on how well you country is doing in the ratings and when you do qualify for the proper champions league group stages how well you do!
A team that starts in the 1st round has less chance of qualifying for the group stages as they will be more tired than other teams that come in at the later stages.
Its good for the clubs on financial terms though! I think its fine as it. The margin of quality between the top teams in each league around Europe is very small. In the big 3 leagues, England, Spain and Italy, you got a three horse race for the title with only a few games left. If a team only misses out on the leage championship by a few points, then surely they shoudnt miss out on champions league football.
Of this year's semifinalists, I think only two are actually champions (United and Real?). Its not the Champions League, its the "top teams in the top leagues" competition. And some clubs want to change it so that they get in to the competition year in year out, such as AC and Inter Milan, who, let's face it, haven't exactly been an outstanding presence in recent years.
I completely agree with your ideas, get rid of the first round, lose all of the runners-up and the third and fourth places (*Cough* Liverpool *Cough*). I know this will lose the clubs money, but who cares. At the rate they are going, they won't be able to afford to give away all the prize money anyway, so they'll have to cut down the number of teams.
