I'm not much of a political activist, but you can't help noticing the coverga surrounding the French election. If you haven't got a tele, then basically some French bloke who no-one ever expected to get anywhere and is near the end of his political carrer is doing quite well - he might even win. Fair enough I thought to myself, it's an election, people have the right to vote for who they want. So why all the fuss? I think this is why:

From the BBC NEWS website - Le Pen's goals:
Abolition of European Commission and Maastricht treaty
Revival of the franc, alongside euro
Re-creation of trade barriers with EU countries
Separation of French families' funds from those of foreigners
Ban on building of mosques in France
Reintroduction of the death penalty

Errr...ok...seperation of foreigners funds...ban on building mosques...this guy has a major bug up his a**e. Check it out for yourself on any news site anywhere.

I saw in the Private Eye two maps of France.

One showed the areas where Le Pen was popular and the other was how the area was affected after Chernoble (sp)... the areas of high voting are very similar to those of badly affected areas.

But Still, 18% of the votes for Le Pen is still quite a bit aint it?

About 78% of people allowed to vote voted.

I'm not too sure about the population demographic of France...but surely more than half of the population are able to vote.

France has a population of about 60 Million.

Using this rough guide...about 4 Million People voted for Le Pen. Thats still quite a lot aint it? Worrying?

Good

Although something annoys me that people are only voting to keep him out and not get who they want in.

The guy must be in his seventies so was about a teenager when World War 2 finished... he must have heard or seen what the Nazi's did to his country yet he is one.

Bah

Jacques Chirac has won a landslide victory in the French presidential election after voters surged to the polls to keep out far-right leader Jean-Marie Le Pen.

With 97% of votes counted, Mr Chirac had about 82% of the vote, while Mr Le Pen had 18%.

Thats that sorted then...

Stupid Canadians.

"It's like a traffic jame, when you're already late."

No, that's just annoying. The song should be called just that, annoying. It would be ironic if you were a member of the town council, on the way to a meeting about the alleviation of traffic congestion.

That was irony, a remnant from my sulk with Goatboy for saying I was pncy for liking foreign films.

Speaking of irony. Has anyone ever told Alanis Morrissette that she doesn't in fact know what it means.
"It's like Ray-eeeeee-ainnnnn on your weddin day"

No it's not. It's not that at all. Stupid long-faced Canadian.
