Nintendo have recently announced the move into a new genre for the worlds favourite plummers, Mario and Luigi.
Putting new twists on there trademark characters has always been one of Nintendo's strong points, and previous ideas such as Mario Kart and Super Smash Brothers have worked well.
Nintendo have also recently been trying to lose there family image of gaming, winning games such as Resident Evil and Final Fantasy from Sony, so naturally they are bringing to us a game for older gamers, based on the Mario brothers.
The game will be set 10 years before the Plumbers made the big time, and as the legend goes Mario was Plumbing whilst making money from various sideline activities such as pornography and pimping.
Going by the alias Mario 'The man' he and his brother Luigio 'The understudy' (Luigi later changed his name at the request of Nintendo to give it a more friendly tone) were the heads of a cartel of Plumbers, fixing prices, delaying repairs and holding up shipments of parts, making sure they paid there dues to the local don BOwsa 'The King' Coopar.
The games story is still under debate, but it seems as if Luigio was caught cutting cocaine with talcum powder, and has ratted out the entire network of Bowsa 'The King' Coopar. Both brothers go into hiding, but Bowsa traces them and kidnaps Mario's sicilian wife 'Pamela' (known as princess to Mario) and his son, affectionally known as Mushroom (due to his wedge haircut). There are twists planned in the story, such as when Mario finds out that Mushroom is in fact Luigio's son.
The game is in the format of a side scrolling beat em up on GBA, but for the Gamecube version,a 3D engine will be used. The game will be set in a modern city, with Mario and Luigio having to meet various underworld dealers to get information on where the wife and son are being held. Mario will be able to steal cars, planes and motorcycles, rob banks and buy accessorys to gain money to buy either information or drugs to sell on. Playing as Luigio will entale managing the pimping side of the business. Spending time with each character will be essential to completing the game.
In both version pick ups and weapons will be avalable, including copper and lead pipes up to Uzis and bazookas as the game progresses.
Other pickups will include magic mushrooms and flowers, which will alter marios strength and perception of reality. The top pickup is a star (a form of steriod) that will give mario super strength and render him invicible for short times.
The multiplayer looks fantastic, with four players competing to find the pricess as either Mario, Luigio, The local asian private eye Mario has hired - Mike Yoshimite and the the third Mario brother (who actually was shot as legend tells) Sergio 'Sonic'. short).
When you complete the game there are various endings, in which you find out information about the characters depending on your performance, including about mario's parentage, Tommy's dissapearance and finally we will find out Mario's second name.
Mario Brothers: Plumbers of Rage is still in development and will be available in early 2004.
