Every day graphics are upgrading so games like GT and MGS2 don't look as good as they used to.
nintendo took a big leap from the snes to the n64. The first real console that based its self on 3D games. Playstation followed shortly ands then mega drive and snes were taken away and they have never had a good word said for them since. Sega tried to keep up with the new console and so came the sega saturn. The graphics were good at the start of the reign but it died down and so it vanished too.
Playstation and Nintendo64 have both had great success and are both in the pastone more time.
Playstation released a new version, the ps2. and so nintendo released a new console and so microsoft joined the frenzy. Graphics are better than they have ever been. Competition is high and buys are needed to stay up in the battle. Graphics opn these consoles can be brilliant. PS2 still has the capasity and so does the Gamecube and Xbox.
I am not forgetting the hand held consoles either. Hand held consoles have also been in the battle. The game gear was for sega and the game boy for nintendo. Competition was fierce. But nintendo game boy prevailed and took the glory. That is why game boy has gone on to do great things. Game boy color was released onto the market and they were selling like hotcakes. Then a printer for the console came out and now the game boy advanced is the pick of the crop. But still graphics are very limited on a hand held.
So Graphics are good but not brilliant. alot of consoles still have the power for higher power games. and i am sure these games and consoles will be out soon and nothing will stop us from buying them.
However, is it just coincidence that all of the best rated games today also have some of the best graphics. Take the PS2 for example; the top games like Tony Hawk 3, GTA3, GT3, MGS2, etc all have the best graphics. I cant think of many top selling games which don't also have top-notch graphics.
Despite gameplay being a games primary factor, we'd probably all be lying if we said we didn't care about graphics. For example, in football games, being able to score brilliant goals and pull off fantastic set pieces is what we love to do... but we also want to be able to witness these moves in all their glory and watch the replays, etc.
I always find that even if a game plays well, you just don't seem 100% satisfied with it unless the graphics are of an equal quality.
One more thing: The best graphics i have seen for quite some time must be Jet Set radio future on the Xbox. Its like playing within a cartoon!
> Surely its about how good the gameplay is in the end! I couldn't care
> less if games I played on looked a dogs dinner, just so long as it
> kept me playing.
I don't think that is entirely true, a game running in 256colours in 640x480.....actually even less...if this was a FPS or pretty much any game I wouldn't give it the time of day. Games have to have a decent level of aesthetical appearance. I know what you are saying though and gameplay is really important BUT I like having nice graphics and good sound. A game like Aliens vs. Predator 1/2 wouldn't be the same without those!
(I think this argument has been had at least a million times before, so I'm not going to say anymore)
