It is proving to be the biggest and closest console war since the Megadrive battled against the SNES; I am of course referring to the fight that is going on between Microsoft and Nintendo. For a brief overview here, Nintendo and Microsoft released very close together in America, despite awesome sales the X-box did beat the Gamecube and, only just mind, still are today. The X-box was released in Japan in February and has sold a shockingly disappointing 116,000 since is release, compare that with 1.3 million of the PS2 and the 600,000 of the Gamecube. The X-box can already be branded a failure as such, the box is a mainstream system that is supposed to be rivaling Sony not Nintendo but nevertheless Microsoft are rolling on in an attempt to claim the European market, and for a change so are Nintendo.

World War II was the last time that America and Japan went head to head over Europe but this time the favorites are on the Eastern side. The fact is Nintendo has created a stunning launch line up, better than both America’s and Japan’s and despite the delayed date Nintendo have changed their attitude towards the Europeans. And as Miyamoto said, “We are so very sorry”, Nintendo promises the greatest launch of all three of the systems, a price unbeatable elsewhere and a console that actually looks really attractive. I have posted before about Nintendo’s marketing campaign, not as much money as Microsoft’s but damn well better, wonder into virtually all shops that sell computer games to get a disc with Gamecube footage shoved under your nose, huge displays and boxes as well as cube clubs and TV advertisement and it has even been the topic of conversation on various TV channels. And some of you don’t realize how much the price will affect the public I know of many who have converted to the cube as they can afford it very soon. In fact pre-orders for the ‘cube have surpassed total sales for the X–box in Japan since February this year.

On the other side of the water is Microsoft’s massive X-box, a console that has had so much money lavished upon it. A console made to appeal to the Playstation gamer, in other words, the mass market. But the console has suffered several criticisms, poor price point is the major factor but the fact it is made by Microsoft and the size of the controller is another. The games meanwhile are stunning but even they aren’t pulling in the punters, Halo should be enough to sell any console but not those priced at £300. And so Microsoft did it they dropped the price to £200, same price of the PS2 and only a little off the Gamecube’s price. Nintendo’s response “the Gamecube’s price and launch line up is unbeaten elsewhere and we do not plan to reduce the price in Europe this year”… 2 days later: GAMECUBE PRICE DROP. I’ve heard of aggressive fighting but dropping the price of the console BEFORE the console comes out!!!! The fact is anyone gets close to the consoles price and Nintendo pull there brief moment away from them. Nintendo always shock Resident Evil, Zelda Cel-Shaded, Final Fantasy and just now the price drop I am scared to think about the E3 games show!!!!

Well the war rages on and it is can only be a good thing for the Europeans, the Americans have the PS2 at $299, the X-box at $299 and the Gamecube at $199, and in Europe we have price slashing left right and centre. And you thought Nintendo didn’t care, if this was the case why all the effort? I tell you this time next year they’ll be giving them away.

Here’s to the future

Since when has the Xbox outsold Gamecube?

I heard that the GC had outsold the Xbox by a fair margin, although near towards the end Xbox sales did rise and come close to Gc sales. But I don't think MS were more successful, unless you can prove me wrong.
Oh, and SSBM outsold MGS2 in America.

Micrsoft made the first move, but its nice to see Nintendo are willing to fight fire with fire :)

Gamecube + 2 Games for £200? Yes please:) (£135 for console from SR, Games £32.99 from Play)

PS2 to follow suit? I doubt it(although it will be interesting to see how they sort out all the stuff with thier hard-drive and Broadband adapter) . As long as it remains the same price as the X-box we shoudnt see much more movement. They should still be able to charge more becasue of the extras they provide on top of being a Games console. While the GC is seen as a Pure Games console and hence the lower price.

One Things for sure, the Gamer is definitely winning.
