Ok, this weekend I have decided to splash out and get my comp sorted. I have ordered a new motherboard (MOTHERBOARD - MICROSTAR K7 TURBO LITE WITH AUDIO. AMD K7 - THUNDERBIRD - ATHLON, SOCKET A, 600 - 1900Mhz, ATX, VIA VT686A, 3 x DIMM PC100/133, 0 ISA / 6 PCI / 1 AGP 4X, UDMA100.) and a new CPU (CPU, AMD, ATHLON XP, 1800+ / 266MHz (1533MHz), SOCKET A, 128K, 512K, 266Mhz bus speed)

I need to know about cooling for the cpu tho. I dont know what to get. Would this work - "HEATSINK AND FAN FOR AMD K7 ATHLON CPU. Clip on heatsink with active fan to provide optimum working temperature for AMD’s K7 Athlon Processors." ??

Er...I don't really know what the hell anyones on about so I'll just recomend that you try not to get Windows XP; it's bug ridden.

Erm...it'd work, as in it'd fit on the socket and cool your cpu, but it's designed for a standard athlon, not an XP1800...will run significantly hotter, especially if you overclock it a bit later on. I'd go for either the Thermalright AX7 with an 80mm fan or the Thermaltake volcano 7 as performance coolers - or get a Zalman flower, significantly quieter and rated up to XP1900s.

Presumably SR don't stock these, it was the "One hsf fits all" approach last time I checked, so find me on msn/email if you need links - [email protected]
