The best thing about fantasy is the way it allows the mind to enter into strange and unusual worlds which do not exist.
....And for me, it is within this magical zone where videogames truly excel.

It could be said that even the most "realistic" of games are in effect fantasy games, for they allow the player to experience in a virtual way what it might be like to race in the concentrated blur of a Grand Prix or be a solider in the furnace of battle.
But the best form of fantasy is "absolute fantasy" - that is to say: when the player can explore and interact with fantastical realms and ideas born purely of the imagination.

Just think of the wondrous places we (as gamers) can go: Hyrule, Marioland, the nameless fairytale landscape and architecture of ICO - the list is a long and varied one, and all these curious and exotic places have one thing in common: they are unique worlds of mystery and wonder.

Free from the constraits of "realism", the inner-eye of the games creator's imagination can fly wherever it so desires.
In a world of dreams and fantasy, anything is possible, and just about anything can become real within it's fanciful boundaries.

I suspect that it is only within these kinds of fantastical gameworlds that we become truly enchanted and immersed.
Magical games which have beautiful and surreal landscapes, fascinating and charismatic characters, absorbing and intriguing storylines - this is where I want to spend my precious gaming time.

To step into the boots of a fearless adventurer and move within the dreamscape of a Small World West of Wonder is (in a gaming sense) the ultimate place to be.

The most memorable gaming experiences are surely found within the never-never-lands of absolute fantasy.

Black Sabbath eh? Rock dinosaurs of the world unite!

"On a small world west of wonder" is a good name for a game - a fantasy game obviously.

It's the opening line from a Black Sabbath song entitled: "The Sign Of The Southern Cross".

"On a small world west of wonder, somewhere nowhere all,
There's a rainbow that will shimmer, when the summer falls,
If an echo doesn't answer, when it hears a certain sound,
Then the beast is free to wander...." (can't remember the rest.)

Yeah, the best thing about gaming is entering worlds of fantasy.
Ico is such a game. The game was set in a mysterious castle in an unknown land.
Whilst playing I felt like I didn't know where I was. It was a place beyond our world in a land that time forgot.
Beautiful gameworlds like Icos stay with us long after we've finished playing.

Cool post V.
Even though I love action-packed games with meaty gameplay, the only games I get truly immersed in are games of "absolute fantasy". Games that take you into another world far, far away full of mystery and fascination.
"On a small world west of wonder".... that's a nice way of putting it.

I agree with what you've said there.
Imagine how dull, boring and pointless gaming could be if ALL games were created based on reality as we see it today, with only the very slightest element of fantasy envloved!

There'd be no Zelda's, no Final Fantasy's, no LBA, and yes Grix, even no Skies of Arcadia!! :O

Gaming just wouldn't be!
