TOKYO, April 22 (Reuters) - Japanese game maker Nintendo Co Ltd 7974.T said on Monday it would cut the planned price of its GameCube home video consoles to 199 euros (US$177) from around 250 euros in Europe.
The gaming giant plans to launch its GameCube console in Europe on May 3 with an initial shipment of 500,000 units.
The price cut comes a week after a price reduction by rival Microsoft Corp MSFT.O on its Xbox game consoles sold in Europe and Australia.
Microsoft's price cut, intended to shore up the Xbox's sagging sales, fuelled speculation of a price war in key markets such as Europe, Japan and the United States.
