In the past week, I finally got into Sonic Advance, and played a lot of it. I completed it, and was then irritated to find that I needed to collect the Chaos Emeralds. "Damn" was the word that sprung to mind. So, I searched the levels for those secret stages, found some, but couldn't find others, and I kept on getting killed! And then I had an idea:

"Why not be able to unlock a mode where you could go around with no baddies, just for curiosity?"

Then I arrived at the Secret stage and I switched off the smart section of my brain. Then the word "Damn" sprung to mind once again when the power was cut by empty batteries. Being 11:00, and not so tired, I had a nice think about the roaming thing.

It could work a bit like Free Skate mode in the Tony Hawk's series, where you have unlimited time to roam freely around a level of your choice, to help memorize where things are. You could put this system into other games, Sonic Advance for one, but there would unfortunately be few others where this could work.

If it were put into a new Sonic Advance game, then my idea is that there would be no rings, no bad guys, just the ramps, checkpoints and other stuff. If you were to fall off, then you'd go back to the last checkpoint you tagged, and the same when at the end of the level. But you'd have to unlock it, otherwise it would be too easy.

I have just realsied I have no other things to say about the idea, and no other games to compare, so I'll just shut up.

I like games like GTA3 and Urban Chaos, where you can freely walk around the city and explore wherever you want. But these games tend to get boring if all you do is walk around and doing nothing but looking around the place. Open ended gaming is a good idea, but we would need something to keep us occupied with.

S'pose it could be quite useful, but in combat games you don't really need it : just get the best gun ever and kick butt.

Or if you want to, upload it to your PC and dissasemble it and get a world map editor! (Bad iadea and cost about $10,000)
