What do I mean by ‘A Proper Storyline?’ A game that has a story that is exciting and intense. A game like Metal Gear Solid 2. Metal Gear Solid 2 uses wit and tension to build by the storyline and the characters in it. It also has a lot of twists and turns to complement the integrate of characters feelings and the atmosphere that the storyline gives.

Other games though, don’t have a proper storyline like Carmageddon and State of Emergancy. These kind of games give a few hours of enjoyment and then you don’t want to play them again. But a game with a good storyline, say Zelda: Ocarina of Time, has a replayablity factor about it, as well as being a great game.

But there are exceptions though. Take Conker’s Bad Fur Day. That storyline is totally pointless. It’s all about a three-legged table, a squirrel, and a glass of milk. It’s not that intelligent for a game that has done so well. But that’s Rare for you.

Twists and turns make a storyline exciting and intense. Metal Gear Solid 2 is a prime example of what I mean. The storyline on itself was pretty good, but finding out that Olga and Snake have been working together and Solidus and Revolver Ocelot have setting the whole Oil Plant up. Now that’s Extreme!

But, I think the actual plot is what is important in a games storyline. You can have developer make games like Carmageddon and State of Emergency by they don’t even have any sort of storyline, oh, and what genre are those kinds of games? But, a game like Shenmue is a quality game, with loads of great things to do and lots of little details, (To find out more about little details in a game read my post ‘Those Little Details’ in the PS1 & PS2 forum) but the storyline is great apart from its not that original, but the QTE’s and fighting sequences make up for that.

The only exception that can be excused from not having a proper storyline, are sport games. But at least there is a point to them, which is more than I can say for games like State of Emergency.

I think one of the most important things about a game, is its storyline. Without a storyline, a game can only offer a few hours of enjoyment but, all the other elements add to the game e.g. the graphics, the gameplay, the sounds and music and so on.

Ok - I missed the gap - should have written per se

per se as in "Of, in, or by itself or oneself; intrinsically"

Nope. A games purse must have plenty of decent sized pockets, a secure fastening and a neat logo.

A Proper storyline is not an essential part of games perse. It is only essential for adventure games etc that rely on storyline for the structure of the game.

Sports games like GT3 and Pro Evo do not rely on a storyline at all and they provide hours and hours of entertainment.

Beat em ups like Tekken give you a story of sorts at the start as an excuse to introduce the characters, after that you just go and fight. The story element is secondary.

I disagree. Take Mario 64 & Mario World for example, two of the best games ever made, but was there a story? No. Yet they provide many hours of enjoyment because of the well designed levels and many things to see and collect.
Part of the reason why MGS2 is so good is because of its great story yes, but take that story away and it's nothing, as the gameplay is not great, and the game is mainly filled with cut scenes.

Some games like State of Emergency are for there for just mindless fun, so don't really need a storyline.
Has the Sims got a story? No, yet it is the highest selling pc of all time and is greatly enjoyed by millions of gamers because it's a brilliant game.
Max Payne had a story, but was really just a mindless action game with the storyline not being the most important part.

A good storyline is useful, but not essential.
