You always start a game, with, minimal items. I shall use a few games to try and prove this to you. Goldeneye, you start each level with only 1 or no guns normally. V-Rally, you start with smaller, slower cars, and you can unlock faster, bigger cars later on. So, you start from the bottom so to say, and work your way up.

But, what about starting the game, with, limited movement, or, like a disability. Such as a broken leg which you broke while trying to rescue the beautiful girl of your dreams from evil Dr.Death. Look, there you have a plot and you have an interesting start to the game in the first 2 minutes.

Im just a little tired of the way games start quite, boring. Its always the same, you have no guns/life/items and you have to scrap you way up. This is how 90% of the games start, which is fine and it works well if done correctly and with care and attention. But for one, I would like to see a little change.

I will now proceed to write a few starts for certain genre's of games.

FirstPersonShooters: You start in a hospital in a wheelchair and to find the "Magic" cure you have limited movement, and limited time, so you need to hurry. The Killer Zombies put you in hospital while you where trying to rescue your younger sister who was kidnaped by the leader Zombie and now you want revenge...

Racing: Someone has sabotaged your car, or more realistically, something has gone wrong. Say, at the start of a season, you have a dodgy gearbox. This however, is nobody's fault, and could get very annoying. So, I was thinking that, this only happened on the first few times. Or, you could have tire blowouts. Punctures and the such. Giving the game a bit of extra spice.

Football: Now, this is tricky. Myself, I was thinking about some kind of really bad tackle that could ruin a star players career. Or, your whole team, except the B-Side get knocked out with the flu, leaving you with, B-Side quality and giving you the worse possible start to a season. You want a challenge? Here you go..

Flying: You are thrown into a ship and given a task to do, and you have engine trouble. Great. It would keep you alert, and on your toes for hours wondering what the game would throw at you next. Need to pull up? Just pull up.. or will you just stall and burn? Mwuah!

Strategy: Hmm, another tricky one. Or not. You find a nice area, to "Build" on lets say, and you build an empire of mega-monster-killing-machines then you realise that you have infact built on quicksand or right underneath water. Surprised? I bet you were.

So, the limited movement could only really be applied in FPS's and Racing games. Although, a better, action filled surprising, adrenaline pumping start would be greatly appreciated by many gamers. Its not just that starts, and limited movement, its the excitement of a new different idea in games. This limited movement thing was just a little idea to get the cogs working upstairs.

I think its time for some new new idea's to flood the market. I want it.

Well, if you got down to here. Good. :o)

Odd you mention this...

One of the big reasons for Halo being so highly acclaimed is the weapon system. You see, rather than start with a pistol, and then get a machoine gun, and then a rocket launcher (etc...), you can only carry 2 weapons at once, and all of them are equally balanced.

The pistol is VERY accurate, but no where near as powerful as the rocket launch (say).

Mind you, no game will be as well balanced as Street Fighter 2 (Turbo) or SNES Mario Kart!

I love the ballistic approach to punctuation :D. I would use a comma in this post but you've worn them out ;)
