Microsoft promised to 'everyone' that its X-Box console would be a huge success the world over, that it would set a standard, that it would deliver to gaming that the world has never seen before.

And what a load of rubbish that was.

They knew from the onset that Japan would be a major hurdle to overcome, with the might of the PS2 to topple and overthrow and of course the newcomer being Nintendo's beauty-The Gamecube.
The land of the Rising sun would prove to be the holy grail.
And now, the latest sales figures have proved that Microsofts X-Box is getting no where soon.

With a disappointing figure of 1.800 units per week for the X-Box against an ever increasing tally of 10.000 for Nintendo's Gamecube and 31.000 for Nintendo's Game Boy Advance. Nothing could be a huge reminder to Microsoft of the mammoth hurdles to overcome in Japan than the truly impressive sales of the Mighty Playstation 2: 55.000 last week alone!
Heck, the DEAD Dreamcast is sitting at....get this.....1.500 Units last week!! 300 units below the supposed conqueror the X-Box, even the PSone is outselling it!
Now that is truly feeble.
The Sun doesn't seem to be shining in Microsofts corner in Japan at all.
For the time being the PS2 is the system that dominates any other console in Japan.
But what on Earth should Microsoft do? They have purchased exclusive rights of Kemco's Dead or Alive series to be an exclusive to the console to get Japanese punters to seem a slight bit of interest in it.
And that hasn't worked, only for that title the X-Box would have been extinct from day one.
With the announcement of a price drop in Europe and the rumours that Microsoft are attempting to Court developers the world over(Including Nintendo's Rare) Microsoft seem a little desperate and are showing to others that they are in a battle for survival.
The Playstation 2 remains a huge beacon with the gaming world.
The PS2's Success is evident of the hard work Microsoft have to do- to get to that same level.
What Microsoft must understand that you just don't expect to flaunt to the industry from day one of entering it and expect to be the Dominating Kings.
Sony didn't do that, they entered rather quietly with the PS, respectful of Nintendo and look where that got them now...Above Nintendo.
Quite frankly, it wouldn't surprise me if the X-Box proved to be a huge failure 2 years from now. With the impending release of the Gamecube days off in Europe, X-Box's days are limited.
Just wait to the releases of Grand Turismo 4, Devil may Cry 2, Resident Evil0-4, Mario Sunshine and Metroid Prime to you see the effect on Microsoft ever more.
You'll see.

For some reason, I feel the X-Box sales will pick up after the price drop, but will rapidly fall by the months.
As for America, it doesn't make or break a console.

MS has by no means failed... in Japan yes, in America no.

And that's where the MS market is- America.
Most of the games are aimed at the West, as is the advertsing and style of the machine. As a result it's selling shed loads over the pond- beating the GC in both software and hardware sales.

Now, this is more than enough to make sure the Xbox is not a failure... but how great a success will it be?

The question now is how well it does in Europe. Although everyone is saying sales figures are low, none have actually EVER been released (although the facts are inferred by price decreases). IF the sales increase after these price cuts, then MS will probably be in a stronger position than Ninty worldwide (on consoles... not inc GBA!). If not, then MS will have a good enough grasp on the market to keep the console going until about 2005.
