"Microsoft has slashed the price of its Xbox games console by £100 in order to compete with Sony's PlayStation 2.
Chris Lewis, director of home and retail for Microsoft UK, claimed dropping the price to £199 has nothing to do with poor sales in the region, despite claims the Xbox was originally priced beyond the means of many Europeans and was too expensive to compete with the dominance of the PlayStation 2.
Lewis said: "We announced the price of Xbox in Cannes late last summer. Things were different in the market then. This cut is to remove any barriers to our growth."
However, a spokesman from a rival console company said: "This move might be perceived as desperation to boost sales in Europe."
Sales of the Xbox have been shrouded in secrecy and Lewis was unable to comment on sales predictions.
The price cuts come into effect on 26 April and anyone who has already purchased a console, or does so before that date at the full price, will receive two free games and an Xbox controller as compensation.
Sony's Playstation 2 is priced £199 and Nintendo is due to launch its GameCube in Europe on 3 May priced around £200."
Cool, huh!
