Sure the games will look nicer, run faster, be bigger but will they really be anything new. We have been playing the same sorts of games for ages. The advent of better technology allowed for the arrival of FPS's like Doom, Unreal etc but since then nothing has really changed.
Are there new ideas out there waiting to arrive or are we just going to see sequels and rehashes of the same old ideas. Whatever happened to originality. Dont get me wrong I recognise that there are some great games that have arrived over the last couple of years, such as Metal Gear Solid, Crazy Taxi etc but they seem to be few and far between.
I understand that companies of wary of changing the formula that works and I must say that some of the crap that is churned out under the guise of originality is pitiful. BUT at some point developers are going to have to think of some new genres and new ideas. We cant go on playing Street Fighter forever, can we????
Not just crime though. Think harder.
I cant say that I am a fan of the new craze for dancing games but there are new things that can be done and there are people out there with good enough imaginations to come up with new games. The sims for example does not really fit into any category, it is an innovative and enjoyable game.
Maybe we need to break the genre destinctions down a bit. I dont mean have one level where you fight, one where you drive etc as most of these sort of games have been crap. What I mean is say a world where you can developa character through its experiences. The possibility of getting into fights, stealing cars, getting arrested etc in relation to your actions. A very tall order I agree but before the release of GTA it was thought a tall order to be able to steal any one of the hundreds of cars driving around and parked in the city.
I dont want games to reflect reality, per se, I just think that there must be a way to make them less limiting. The idea of Doom, shoot everyone and get to the end of the level, then do it again, and again etc is very out of date. Games must be able to manage more depth in order of offer long term appeal.
I agree with you that Capcom are milking the franchise for all it's worth now. If they were to develop another Street Fighter title, I would like to see full-resolution 2D characters, similar to those of Guilty Gear X's. A new combo system wouldn't go amiss either, but there's only so much you can do with the 2D beat-em-up genre isn't there?
We're asking for new genres, but what else is there that isn't covered in some way, shape or form already? We've got Beat-em-up's, dance-em-up's, horse racers, racers, shooters, first-person etc.
Personally speaking, I am very much looking forward to Sega's Samba De Amigo. Also, this title hasn't really been mentioned much, but when I end up purchasing a PS2 early next year, I'm looking forward to giving Fantavison a whirl.

I love the Street Fighter series and I must say that it is probably my favourite beat-em-up of all time. I loved Street Fighter Turbo on the SNES. BUT I think Capcom are flogging a dead horse now. It has come as far as it can and we need new ideas.
OR at the very least a proper makeover. Not just some graphical adjustments, a couple more moves and a couple of superfluos changes. Just like films a game can only get away with so many sequels!!!
