It's an old saying that's commonly used in connection with Football and other sport and team competitions. It basically means that no one member is bigger than the rest of the team, like the old saying in Football: "No player is bigger than the club!" 'Prima-dona' is the name given to a footballer who is acting in this way, trying to be bigger than the club and stand out as the no.1 team member.
And unfortunately there seems to be a growing number of 'prima-dona's in football today.

There is one incident in football recently that has not only flooded the world with it's 'shocking' news, but has also made me realise that many of us believe this one player is bigger than the team - and we all know we shouldn't be thinking like that.
Of course, i'm talking about David Beckham's foot injury. Not only does he miss another 6 weeks or so, but his chances of starting England's first World Cup match look pretty silm!

David Beckham. Not only is he one of the finest passers of the ball this country has seen since the days of Bobby Charlton, but he's also proven over the last year or so that he DOES have what it takes to lead Sven-Goran Eriksson's England side to victory and bigger things. Oh, and of course, you can't exactly ignore his free-kicks and long range efforts!
The amount of attention and publicity this injury has recieved is phenomenal! So big, that's we've all forgotten about the 'Bin Laden Search' and the 'Queen Mum's Deaprture to a Better Place'!
And with so much attention have come many varied opinions on England's chances this summer and Manchester United's trophy hunt appears to be out of ammo!

Who says we can't win the World Cup without just ONE top player???
Look around. We still should have the likes of Owen in the attack, Gerrard in Midfield, with Martyn or Seaman, and Campbell and co. all at the back.
Does that sound like a team doomed to fail?? No.
Sure he may be the right man to captain the team following Shearer's early departure, but there are still some great leadership quallities in other players!
Again, look aroung. Adams, Campbell and Southgate in then right place at the back. Ok, Beckham may be the only real capable midfielder but even in the attack we have Fowler and Sheringham, and Owen will be a surprise contender in tonight's match against Paraguay! So there really is no need to worry about Beckham not being captain for a game or two.

He's also a player who is 'unique' with his passing and creative abillities. But there are always the likes of Anderton and even Joe Cole for the corners. Remember Sheringham's free kick against Mexico?? And i'm sure young Kieron Dyer's learnt a thing or two from Newcastle team-mate Laurent Robert! So again, we have nothing to worry about on the side of set pieces.

So wherever a gap is left by Beckham or any other player, it can always be filled by the quality within the squad.

And as for the United squad, I don't think they'll be missing Beckham much!
Without Keane also, they are struggling slightly for a captain. But with the experience of Blanc and Johnsen at the back, and Giggs in midfield, there will always be someone to back-up Gary Neville while he takes-charge on a temporary basis.
On the free-kick front, the problem was solved for £28.1m last summer! Juan- Sébastain Veron. He may not have had a great first season at Old Trafford, or in the Premiership for that matter, but MY WORD he can't half hit a decent free kick! And the same applies to the curl Ryan Giggs can put on the ball, and the 'thunder-bolts' Paul Scholes can hit!
Who's smiling now!?? All United and England fans should be when they realise that their teams don't revolve around David Beckham!

With so much attention being paid to Beckham's injury, it does seems like we only care about him the most, meaning that he IS our 'only hope' in the World Cup - when we all know how wrong that is!
If anything, this is only gunna make him feel a lot worse and more depressed, and he may not feel all that glad when he finally comes back.
So why don't we just give him some time and space, and lets see what happens without him! :D

Would we really be all that bothered if Gary Neville was injured?? No.
Get well soon David. And don't worry, we won't miss you. ;)

Yes, Beckham's free kick finally won us the Greece match, and yes, he has also proved to have a strong part in England reaching the World Cup finals. And he has also shocked the public by proving he can captain a side with influence in the way he plays - and not in his voice - just like Owen did last night.
But it's after things like this have happened that he has been seen as 'England's only hope' of achieving anything this summer, but England is a TEAM and doesn't realy solely on David Beckham's efforts!

There was also a lot of hype surrounding Michael Owen when he first arrived on the international scene. And with some good performaces and a few goals many fans were relying on him to do the work - just like now with Beckham!

So again, we shouldn't be relying on Beckham so much and should have faith in the other 22 in the squad this summer to help get the job done - in a team effort!!

Well, we dearly missed David Beckam last night, I mean, what are our hopes of a World Cup trophy now? That result just wont do.

there's an i in team if you write in welsh... but then again, in welsh, it wouldn't be 'i'...

oh yeah,

i guess the extent to which that little throat clearance is questionable, but while owen continues to play like a shadow of his former self, i don't think there's any single player would could make anything like the kind of difference to an (england) game that beckham can.
