While I was touring Japan, interviewing many superstars, I bumped into none other than Doshin the Giant. He had a bit of spare time on his hand so he agreed to an interview. On the day he was with his best friend and creator, Kazutoshi Iida, who was translating for him. I was very lucky to actually see Doshin, because this is the first ever interview with him, I got an exclusive, which is normally very hard to get.

I started off the interview by asking him how he was, if the weather was usually hot and all the like.

Rickoss “You have been training for this game for quite some time, Doshin, has it been hard?”

Doshin “Well, I was working very hard on training for the 64DD version, which was unfortunately scrapped for months. I had to get used to the concept of the game and how to do everything. It was hard to not stand on the natives in training, they’re so small and I’m so big compared to them that it’s very hard to see them, never mind not tread on them! There were a few casualties but luckily everyone survived. I think I’ve got the hang of not standing on them, now. My visions seems to have got better *Laughs*. So yes, it was a hard job, but I think I’m ready for the game now.”

Rickoss “So what exactly is the concept of the game?”

Doshin “Well, I live on an island which is inhabited by many natives who belong to different tribes. I have to help them cultivate and build up their villages. I must do various tasks such as collecting fire wood and food for them. I also have two forms which change the concept completely. When I change into my red form, I must destroy what I have built. As my creator Kazutoshi Iida quoted, children build things with building blocks, but a second later destroy their creation. The game is very much based on human behaviour. It’s like the contrast of light and dark, they both clash. It’s an ever changing game that will hopefully get all of your gaming skills working at the same time.”

Rickoss “Do you have any idea when the game is going to be released in Europe?”

Doshin “Well, I don’t know any dates at the moment, but I can tell you this; the game will be released in Japan December of this year, so it will most likely hit European shores in 2003 quarter 1 to 2. But that is if it’s released in Europe. There are still doubts about whether or not it will be released over there. So I only have one thing to say, watch this space *Winks*.”

Rickoss “What kind of sales in the first week or release are you hoping to achieve?”

Doshin “Well, 10 would do me just fine! *Laughs*. No, but really, I’m not really bothered about how many copies are sold, all I’m bothered about is how good the game is. I obviously want a few copies to be shifted, but it’s not my main priority at the moment.”

Rickoss “Is there any news of a sequel ever being made?”

Doshin “Well, it’s very early days on the first one at the moment, so there’s nothing planned yet. Obviously if it’s a success and has room for a sequel, I’d love one to be made, but no, there’s no news of a sequel.”

Rickoss “Are you at all nervous about appearing for the first time on what could be the best Nintendo console since the SNES?”

Doshin “Of course I am. I don’t know whether gamers will like me or the game I star in, so I have no way of telling. Plus I have no idea what I’ll look like in screen. I have no idea which is my ‘good side’ *Laughs*.

Rickoss “What games are you looking forward to?”

Doshin “Well, Animal Leader looks like a possible classic. It may be fighting against me for title of best ‘off the wall’ title, but I’ll really enjoy playing it, seeing how it works. Another is Animal Forest +, again, a lot like my game but it looks fun to play. Also so works on a real-time clock, which means loads of possibilities. Obviously, I’m looking forward to my game, seeing how the gamers will see. All I can do now is work hard and wait.”

Rickoss “Okay, thanks for your time Doshin, hope to see you in the future and good luck on your game”

Doshin “My pleasure.”

I think the 64DD was scrapped because it cost them too much money to make. It was released in Japan I think and they let you do things like put your face on Mario Kart and there was some thing for F-Zero Z which was rather big but forgot.

Does anyone know why the 64DD was scrapped?

Aswell as Doshin the Giant being scrapped for the DD along with the console's UK launch, apparently Majora's Mask was destined to use the add-ons capabilltiies - but possibly as 'Zelda Gaidon'.
That's all I know. But about this game, I only know that you must control Doshin the.... Giant and help people by moving them around the island or somthing, avoiding floods and stuff.

Yeh, freedom would be good. Take Perfect Dark, the GB face thing was taken off because they thought you might really shoot your brother after doing it on a computer game. Maybe maniacs would, but surely they should know we're not that stupid!

I don't know an aweful lot about this game, but does anyone know what happened to all the other games destined for the DD? Personally, I'd love to have more editting features in games- like using the GB camera to get faces for PD for example- but allowing more freedom.
