The basic story of the game is that the ever so loveable Disney character Mickey Mouse has had his dog Pluto kidnapped for his diamond collar. Then Mickey realizes that in order to get his dog back he is going to have to get help in the form of his friends.
To start of with there are 6 playable characters. Minnie Mouse (Mickey’s girlfriend) and Daisy are great all round performers, Mickey and Donald Duck are perfect for beginners as their stats are all equal and then Goofy and Pete are definitely for experts as their handling is poor and they have a good top speed. There are 3 secret characters to obtain by getting a Gold Cup on the three race modes on the settings Amateur, Intermediate and professional. The secret characters are Dewey, Louie and Huey (Donald Ducks cousins I think) but to unlock Huey you have to have a transfer pack and the game on your Game Boy Colour.
There are 6 different modes to play on the Game. There is the time trial mode where you race against the clock, contest which is a battle mode (this is exactly the same as Mario Kart where you have balloons), practise where you can well just practise on the tracks, Freeway phobia this is one of the race modes, Motor way mania this is the same as the latter mode (but with different tracks obviously) and there is Traffic trouble which once again is the same as the latter but with different tracks.
In order to track down Pluto’s dognapper (see what I did there with the dog bit…ah forget it) you have to race across the good old USA including states such as New York, Texas, Hawaii, Washington D.C. and Las Vegas (my personal favourite track). There are 20 different tracks to start off with and all of them look great. As you could imagine they start off easy but become extremely hard later on and in order to come first in every race you are going to have to be one hell of a driver. When I first got this game I played all the tracks on the Amateur setting and I thought it was a tad easy but then I tried it on the Intermediate setting and it was well hard, I never realized how good the computer controlled characters could be. They really are superb and if you want to have any chance of getting a bronze trophy you are going to have to have your wits about you. Once you get a gold cup on the professional level you will unlock the 4th set of tracks, these tracks collective name is Victory Vehicles and if you retrieve the 4 car parts which are scattered across the tracks you unlock a 5th level called Frantic Finale.
Now while you are racing like mad to get in first place you will come across numerous amounts of weapons, I will run through a few of them: (by the way they all have rather scientific names)
Carbo-Beverage Spritzer – A posh name for a sudden burst of speed.
Incredi-Flated Baseball chucker – This fires baseballs straight ahead (like the green shells in Mario Kart)
Stormy Weather Whenever Engager – This slows down all the characters karts who are ahead of you (like the lightning bolt in Mario).
Now onto the graphics. As you could expect from a Disney game the graphics are bold, cute and colourful and well I love it. The characters look identical to their TV counter parts. The music is also very cheerful and well it just makes you glee with delight when you here Goofy’s adorable little voice when he over takes someone, it just makes you warm up inside, ok so maybe I went a little far but you can understand what I’m trying to get at.
Over all this game rocks. If you are looking for a game like Mario Kart but with more of a challenge because lets face it Mario Kart 64 is just too easy then look no further than this baby right here. Also if you’re lucky you can get it cheap for £15 like me.
