Down the years there have been many uninformed individuals who wrongly label Nintendo consoles as “kiddie”.
Well, to a certain degree they’re right, but they also miss a huge point.
Nintendo are, and always have been, catering for the family orientated market and they provide great gaming for all age groups, from the young to the older hardcore gamers.
But why are so many fools so quick to jump on the bandwagon and claim that Nintendo games are just children’s toys?

I’ve been a big Nintendo fan for many years now, ever since my brother and I got hooked on our NES all those years ago, we have had a special bond with the big N, and have always been satisfied with the gaming treats they have served up, so it saddens me that so many ignorant people always dismiss Nintendo consoles as being merely for kids. I think it’s the complete opposite, as many people like myself have grown up with Nintendo, and so many older gamers still love their games.
If any of the three super consoles were to take pride of place in the living room, it would definitely be the Gamecube, where all the family can enjoy it.

Many Nintendo games are aimed at a younger audience, but is that really so bad?
Pokemon probably lowered the average age of Nintendo fans significantly as it enticed many young children, but that is great, as it introduced many young first time gamers into our great hobby. My younger brother played through and really enjoyed many Pokemon titles; those games gave him the necessary gaming skills to attempt harder games and he has since completed Breath of Fire on the GBA and is currently enjoying Super Mario Advance 2.
I have a PS2 as well, but which games would people prefer to play if given the chance in my household? Multi-player larks on Mario Tennis /Party, Super Smash Bros win hands down.

Is it misunderstanding of the way Nintendo works in not wanting too many overtly violent games, or is it just ignorance or jealousy that make so many idiots talk about the Big N’s family friendly approach?

Nintendo consoles do have their fair share of violent games; Turok: Dinosaur Hunter was one of the first N64 titles, and pioneered the violent death sequences and big guns.
Eternal Darkness and the amazing looking Resident Evil and Resident Evil Zero prove that Nintendo games have a great balance of titles, from adult to child orientated.
But what is the appeal of violent games anyway? I’ve played through GTA3, MGS2, Max payne, Half-Life, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, MoHAA, and although all of them were great titles, none of them can offer the sort of gaming experience that a multi-player game of Mario Tennis / Party, Smash Bros or GoldenEye with the family can offer.

The same sort of misunderstanding happens with Japanese Anime (It’s NOT called Manga—got it??)
People who don’t have a clue about anime think it’s either:

Really excessively violent and disgusting like ‘Urotsukidoji’ or ‘Akira’.

OR

'Pokemon' & 'Dragon Ball Z' style hyperactive stuff with characters possessing huge eyes.

Well, some anime is like that, but most isn’t. There are many intelligent dramas like ‘Patlabor 1 & 2’ and ‘Wings of Honneamise’ that have fantastic animation and brilliant characters with no hint of violence or madcap craziness.
Studio Ghibli are a well known anime production studio who are probably best described as “The Nintendo of Anime”, led and influenced by Hayao Miyazaki (himself once described as the Walt Disney of Japan). Ghibli, like Nintendo, pride themselves on making anime films for all the family, ‘My Neighbour Totoro’, ‘Kiki’s Delivery Service’, ‘The Castle of Cagliostro’ and ‘Porco Rosso’ are all fine examples of pure harmless fun for all the family. Any fool who believes the old anime stereotypes should watch those films to have a proper informed opinion.

Going back to games then, although the PS2 maybe hip & trendy amongst 12 year old skateboarders, wannabe DJs and gangster rapper/Ali G style ‘yoofs’ who hang around town centres looking tough and drink alco-pops, but I couldn’t give a monkeys, as I’d prefer to play games with all my family on a Nintendo console in the living room than have the majority of games on PS2 & Xbox being aimed at pre-pubescent teens in their dark & smelly bedrooms who think they’re grown up “Coz we ‘ave violent gamez”. Nintendo games are and always will be the best......period.

Well, it's quite obvious that with the likes of Resi Evil and Eternal Darkness that Nintendo's so-called 'kiddy image' is fading slightly, but is this jus for now or will these more 'mature' games cease to exist on future Nintendo consoles??

And also, who's to say that all if these 'mature' games will have a similar effect that the likes of Mario and Zelda do - especially amongst the youngest of Nintendo gamers!

So these 'alien-like' games for a Nintendo may not succeed just like many people are hoping. After all, Nintendo design both their consoles and games to suit a variety of ages. And if some games don't have a good effect amongst all gamers then Shigsy and co. may decide that this shouldn't happen the next time, and that they WERE right with the N64 and SNES games!
