Colleco Intellivision Vs. Atari 2600
Commodore 64 Vs. Speccy 48K
NES Vs. Master System
SNES Vs. Mega Drive
Amiga Vs. Atari ST
GameBo Vs. GameGear
PS Vs. N64
Theres not been much contention about why this is, mainly because most people just think its silly.
I appears to revolve around insecurity on the part of the console owner, it appears they live not only, with a constant, sneaking suspicion that the console they bought possibly wasnt the best one... but also, that at any moment the rest of the world will realise this too!
My question is... which of the console wars was the best?
For my money, the 'classic' battle is, and will always be between Speccy and C64 owners... Though my favourite wars will always be that of the ST Vs. Amiga.
> PS2
> X-Box(current fav)
What made you decide to make the move?
(I'm not a PS2 owner! :) )
There are some who would say there are no winners from the 'console wars' just losers... you, the consumer... But they are just people are just silly, they've got no real opinion, they just want to look like they have sone esoteric worly view... they will most certainly be the first against the wall when the revolution comes.
-- Colleco Intellivision Vs. Atari 2600
Winner : Atari
Loser : Intellivision
Casualties : I seem to remeber there were a few other generic systems about at the time? .. But I was very young when this was all going on, so I'm not too sure.
The 2600 was manufactured from the mid/late seventies up until 1989... does anyone know if its still the longest running console? (does anyone care?)
I seem to remeber this was a VHS Betamax thing, that although the Intellivision was a better system, Atari proved to be more popular?
-- Commodore 64 Vs. Speccy 48K
Winner : Speccy
Loser C64
Casualtie : Far, far too many to mention... Just engouh to say Amstrad were rubbish
Okay, Its true, both the C64 and Speccy were top machines...
The C64 easily had superior hardware, graphics, audio, processor, etc.. was all far superior to the rubber keyed speccy, it was hugly popular im America, and so held a flood of AAA Yank titles. It had its fair share of British developers, who themselves broke new ground in all aspects of computing (from sound, gameplay, design, etc...), and who are too numerous to mention.
The Speccy had games, and games, and more games.. In fact I think there have been more games written for the Speccy than any other computer (a title its held since the late eighties). Though that wasnt its strength, Speccy had character, and was fun. Their seemed to be a vein of humor (abeit British humor) running through most Speccy games, amazingly there was an awful lot of games that would make you laugh (a genuinly funny computer game -- you lie!)... It was something the C64 titles seemed to lack (actually its a problem I find with almost ALL American titles, then and since)
I owned both, first a Speccy, then a C64, they were top machines (and a good deal more advanced than it seems many people on these forums believe...
To be honest, here, the winner was whichever machine you grew up with...

An Amiga fan yay!

A PS1 fan... errm... I'd stopped caring by then
And quite possibly gay.
C64 vs. Speccy was a hefty battle, but the weapons were slow and weak and didn't do much damage. Who won the war is still very much debated. Speccy had the larger army, but C64 was far better equipped. I personally claimed several lives in that war, converting a number of troops to the C64 cause.
Amiga vs. Atari ST - another battle for which I was personally drafted - was a step up in terms of conflict. The hardware was much higher spec, and the armies huge. ST struck first, conquering the land and amassing vast armies. Amiga arrived later, and had to face troops who had been encamped for months. Rather like the Argies in the Falklands, actually. And their fate was to be the same. Like the British military, the Amiga arrived with better weaponry and training. It swept accross occupied territories with frightening efficiency, decimating the ST troops in a vicious and bloody battle to the death, until the Amiga way - the *right* way - was all that remained.
And finally, the PS1 vs. the N64. Another major step-up. N64's hardware was faster and more powerful, but was let down by severly limited ammo supplies. The battle was again fierce and bloody. Fighting for the PS1 army was not pleasant at first. But once we found their weakness, we went for the throat, and our sheer weight of numbers crushed them like the vermin they were. Small pockets of resistance fighters are still found in the darker, smelllier areas of society today. But there is no need to shed more blood, for they know that we have won. The only weapon we need point at them is our fingers, and the only ammo needed is our laughter - and they scurry off back to the shadows. Occasionally we throw them scraps to live on. We're not entirely heartless, after all.
