Apart from it's 'controversial' price, there appears to be nothing else to complain about, except of course, the size of the thing!
It's been available here in the UK for only a month now, and already we have likes of Halo, GTA 3, Dead or Alive 3, Project Gotham Racing, and more leaving us speechless as we eagerly await to play them!
And as well as a fantastic bunch like that already available, the likes of The Matrix and some older PC and Sega ports are just waiting in the wings fore the future!
So on the gaming front, there's no reason to be dissapointed!
The X-box has been strongly compared to a PC by many people, mainly due to the success of Microsoft PC's. But one thing for sure is that it is not a PC. Even though one or two elementsand features are ideas taken straight from a £1000 machine, including the Hard Drive and DVD player.
But still, I feel that this console is not quite as perfect as it could be.
Every gamer has their own preffered way to play certain styles of games.
Wheel and Pedal combos are very often brought to take every Gran Turismo or MSR fan one stp closer into a realistic gaming experience.
The standard controller pad is still used by many people today for their RPG's and Adventure games, and even PC fans still enjoy the good old Joysticks for their Flight Sims, even if they're the only ones who do.
First Person Shooters are probably the most played style of game on the PC, and maybe also no.1 on all formats. All fans of the likes of Half-Life and Unreal Tournament know that if you're going to play these types of games on-line, there is only one way that works - the keyboard and mouse system.
Nothing else seems to appeal to them when they go off to play an FPS, and some gamers today critisise the console manufacturers who still insist that the control pad and Trigger Button is the way to go.
But why is this style so succesfull??
Well, you really have to play a game in this way to know how well it truky works. You have the keyboard, with seemingly hundreds of buttons, each one to activate a certain command, action or movement. But with a controller, you only really have around 4/5 button maximum to use, and often have to rely on buttons combos to pull-off certain moves.
And as for the mouse, not even with an Analogue Stick can you have the same freedom to look around that is given to you from the click of 2 buttons and a rolling ball mechamnism.
So there is simply no other option for First Person Shooter fans, and many who know or intend to own an X-box will be very dissapointed to realise that no Keyboard or even a Mouse is on the way from Hardware giants Microsoft.
Aswell as just First Person Shooters, there are several other reasons as to why the mighty X-box requires a keyboard and mouse for users to be satisfied.
Surfing the net - Incase you didn't know or hadn't heard, Microsoft have big plans to send their first console into cyberspace as an on-line giant. And just like the Dreamcast, we can expect that you'll be able to surf the net and even go shopping, or do whatever it takes to fulfil your on-line needs. And it'll all be possible thanks to compatible modems and link-ups to a telephone line.
And on-line gaming will also be effected by this With no keyboard or even a mouse, it will be a lot harder to find the server you want - but at least you'll be able to talk to people with the head-sets!
Neither an Analogue Stick or D-pad gives the same effect for pointing and clicking as a mouse. And a hand-full of buttons won't exactly compensate for a non-existant keyboard.
e-mailing - How on Earth will you type out your e-mails and messgaes for great on-line chats without the aid of a keyboard!??
It simply cannot be done! You could try it with the controller I suppose, but that would probably work just like sending an SMS message from a Mobile Phone. Can you actually imagine yourself there with an X-box pad, moving the D-pad to choose the letters and pressing 'A' to select them. This would take a long time, just like Text Messaging. And not only would it be dull and slow, but it could also reduce more and more e-mails and messages to becoming filled with shrthnd jbrsh tht no1 cn undrstnd!
And there's enough of that on the World Wide Web these days!
Voice Recognition programs could be a possible solution. It's quite a popular thing to be tried by PC users, but isn't always that accurate and you would surely be reaching for a keyboard and mouse to correct mistakes within seconds!
These problems and potentially more can only be solved by Microsoft adapting the Keyboard and Mouse system to the X-box!
It's worked very well for PC's and I am very surprised to see that it's something that they are yet to consider at this point in time!
If they can't release an adaptor for existing PC Periphals, then they should at least release a mouse - even if it is black with the green logo!
But if they leave a descision like this too late, the current console war could be over and they would be sitting rock botton due to the success of FPS's and on-line facillities with other consoles!
C'mon Bill Gates, act now before it's too late. What harm can something that'd probably only cost a few hundred Dollars maximum do to your vast millions!
And I also had a feeling that the PC-links comments may have had something to do with it.
As for why Microsoft haven't brought out a keyboard and mouse, they're trying to shake off this "PC" tag the X-Box has been labelled with. Once that goes then maybe a keyboard and mouse will appear sometime.
Surely you don't want to have to use the analogue stick as a mouse and select with the action buttons!??
And does anyone actually know WHY Microsoft haven't already even considered adopting a Keyboard and Mouse system????
I see myself as being much worse with console FPS's than I am with a Keyboard and Mouse - strange??
And what about Championship Manager - the greatest ever footy manager sim.
Surely to play that well for hours on end (like us PC gamers do now) you'll need a keyboard at least to be able to use the search engines properly and find out what you want.
And the mouse would also be very usefull for clicking on certain options and making the right descisions.
How on Earth will this game work well on the X-box WITHOUT a Keyboard or a Mouse!??? IMPOSSIBLE!
Actually haven't had a problem with it on any game with the exception of Obi-Wan. Crouching and using your lightsaber is something thats not supposed to happen. Unless your a martian with a lot of fingers and weird hands. ;-))
