The end of the last Resident Evil was astonishing. Not because it accurately mirrored the games - the movies and games have long parted ways - but because it promised so much. We had Wesker and Alice, working together, ready to defeat a huge horde of enemies that were gathered around the Whitehouse. As the camera panned out, revealing the massed zombies and mutants, you knew the sequel would be a real battle royale.

Except it isn't. Resident Evil: The Final Chapter has the sheer bare faced cheek to start after the end of the battle, Wesker having screwed them over. It's pretty obvious that they decided they couldn't afford the effects required to depict the battle, and hence took this U-Turn. In fact, the whole movie consists of U-Turns. Wesker is relegated to being a second-string baddie, despite the actor's superb performance. And the main bad guy is.. a clone of a previous film's antagonist.

So, the plot's complete cobblers, but plenty of action movies have got away with that. And be under no illusion, this is an action movie. There's very little actual horror in it. But it's just not a particularly good action movie either. Apart from Alice, who's now been established after six or so movies, the other characters are forgettable, more so than your usual action movie cutouts. You're supposed to care when they die, but why? They're such a bland lot.

Then there's the action itself. Jump cuts are used to a ridiculous extent, the camera barely staying still. By action movie standards, it's an editing mess. The original Resident Evil movie was accused of being like a music video but it was actually a respectable enough film. With this, however, this sentiment rings true.

Ultimately, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter feels like a tired mess. Lead actress Milla Jovovich sleepwalks her way through the whole thing, as if she's glad to get this over with. Nonsensical plot points, the multiple narrative U-Turns and a bunch of recycled scenes - including that flipping electric grid room give the impression this film was hastily cobbled together.

Even if you're a fan of the series, you're best off leaving it on a high point because after all the promise of Resident Evil: Afterlife's ending, this took a real downturn. A mess.
