Clare was a normal teenage girl. Seventeen years old, working hard at college, working nights at a restaurant and doing the odd babysitting job to make a bit of spending money. Today was a Friday, and after a hard day’s studying she was off to babysit Mr and Mrs Cooper’s two children, Michael aged eight, and Lucy aged six.

She left college at 4pm and headed to the home she shared with her parents. After a bite to eat she had a shower and got ready and headed off to the Cooper’s at 7pm. She knocked on the door and was let in by Mr Cooper, then greeted the children who she had looked after on a number of previous occasions.

The Coopers left at 7-30pm to meet friends at a local restaurant at 8pm, and Clare, Michael, and Lucy settled down to watch some cartoons on the TV before bedtime. During the cartoons Lucy said she wanted her doll, and said that she had left it in her parent’s bedroom. Clare went upstairs and into the bedroom to fetch the doll, and as she entered noticed a life-sized clown sitting in the corner of the room. It had a scary face and made Clare feel very uneasy, so she grabbed the doll and made her way downstairs to the children.

At 9pm it was time for the children to go to bed. They changed into their nightclothes, brushed their teeth, and Clare tucked them into bed and went back downstairs. After making herself a cup of coffee she settled down in front of the television on her own, but remembered that the Coopers didn’t have cable downstairs, only in the parent’s bedroom, in order to stop the children from watching too much television.

She grabbed the TV guide and saw that there was a good movie on that she would like to watch, so she rang the Coopers on their mobile and asked if it would be OK if she went and watched it in their bedroom. They agreed, and Clare asked if it would also be OK if she moved the clown in the corner of their bedroom as it creeped her out. The Coopers freaked out and told her to get the children and get out of the house immediately while they called the police.

She did as she was told and fled with the children to a next-door neighbour. As she looked out of the front room window, she saw the clown running down the road. Five minutes later the police arrived and explained that there was a serial killer on the loose who liked to hide in people’s homes dressed as a clown, waiting for an opportunity to kill all the occupants of the house.
