Over recent years the DVLA/Government have been improving the access to free information that's available for cars.
Tax status, emissions, engine size, colour, first registration etc.
I've only recently come across their 'MOT History' website which shows MOT passes and failures/advisory notes along with mileage history - all useful info if you are looking at buying a car.
The only details you need are the registration number and manufacturer.
Check the MOT history of a vehicle

Shows:
when its current vehicle tax expires
when its MOT expires
the date it was first registered
SORN status
colour
engine size
year of manufacture
CO2 emissions
current vehicle tax rate
Some sites/apps are reselling this data - always best to go to the official source!
