In my small 10 years or so of gaming i've played the majority of consoles and played countless games, but i put this to you, how many of those games would you change? and what about the range? are games *really* that much different from their sequel/prequel? or even to games in the same category that get rave reviews, but almost copycat games get lower scores, even though they are of the same quality and almost same gameplay, surely if we gave games in a smaller category more credit then maybe more games of that kind will be produced?

Recent examples of this could be wipeout fusion for instance, apart from new courses/weapons/vehicals and polished graphics what was really that different?, well to be honest not a lot, i think people expected a bit more from the game as i did, and were pretty disappointed with the final product, so what went wrong? well it seems its fallen for the "been done before" trick, we had already seen wipeout on the PS and to be honest the PS2 version was not really worth much of wait.
Its a tough question but how can they have changed wipeout more?, maybe change the way it plays or how the courses look and feel, or maybe just scrap the series and and start something new. To be realistic there is only so far you can go with certain games when you just have to move onto something new, although some of us wish they would keep trying it just sometimes is best if you move onto something fresh and new but try and keep some of the old elements there amoungst the new game.

A great example of this would be Naughty Dog, and how they have moved forward, ditching Crash Bandicoot and moving onto a new franchise with Jak and Daxter, its simple little things like new characters, better graphics and new elements added to a new forumla that really made a difference and it was loved by the gaming public.
But digging deep down, was it really that much different to crash in certain ways?, well yes and no, the movement almost felt the same and so did the way the environemnts looked, but the basic gameplay felt the same, the storyline also plays a big part here too, you don't want boring done before stuff, you big , bold , new storylines, one that drag you into the game more, and lets face it, many games fail here, but so many succeed, its a roll of the dice in the end, but i'm glad games like these have turned old things into new and exciting games.

Are we really limited in certain genres?

Great games come and sequel after sequel we see the polished graphics and slightly improved gameplay, but what else do we really need?
Surely there is only so far we can go with a product that we get sick of eventually and just sit back and say "There is nothing more that can be done here". A problem Genre i feel is the racing genre, apart from the more realistic graphics and car handling/online modes, when this has all been done, is it really enough for us to keep buying GT after GT game?
If we sit back and think about what can be done and what will be done to improve something, then we realise that is enough really improving? the thing with games is that they only take big leaps in terms of graphics and gameplay in each generation, Mario 64 gave us massive worlds and quality gameplay, halo has come and along and has changed the way first person shooters are looked at, sure there are more games in this generation which will stun us, but how many will really change the way we look at games?, maybe the truth is not many, but that isnt a bad thing, developers will learn from other developers mistakes and critisisms and more and more quality is brought to us eager gamers. It may take time but it will be worth it, we just have to wait, but to the developer who uses the technology to bring us leaps in terms of graphics and gameplay these can't come soon enough, but will there ever be a time when we leave behind poor games and just have great games? nope, like we say, we learn from our mistakes, and if we do not make any poor games then we have nothing to learn from or improve upon, there is so much to making a game that its hard to imagine how much effort and time goes into games, i don't think many of us realise it.

You hear many people say "oh thats just like that" or "this has been done before", sure thats true in many cases, the developer just throws out last years game with minor improvements, but is this because they feel that its as far as that genre can go at that time? or is it because they want money, i'll leave you to decide about that, but that is one of many questions that only developers know the answer to.

But do you think its time for drastic changes or, is it down to lack of range?
By lack of range i mean that its been done before and the genre seems to be stuck and not moving forwards as much as you would like it to?
For me personally i think we have a great range of games, but many are just too like one another, i'd like to see some games provide bigger leaps as long as the current technology can provide these, i want to see GT3 with more cars on screen, damage models, but maybe we ask too much of developers, there is only so much you can do before one way or another you can't do anymore because of time/engine limitations.

I think we have so much change to come, and in years to come we will be very glad of the changes made, lack of range? don't be silly..

I totaly agree. Theres more range out there than ever, just think back to the days of the Master System and NES and you begin to appreciate the range and detail of modern games.
