Ok, 'fair point' you may think he had made. It's bright purple after all! It looks small, cute and it's got a handle. So maybe it does look like a toy.
So what's Edgy going on about then?
Well the Playstation 2, X-box and GameCube are designed mainly for one sole purpose. To play games. Yeah, 2 out of three give you the option to view DVD movies, listen to CD's and the likes. But their sole purpose is to play games.
What was the key word in that last paragraph? P....Pl....Pla.....Christ! If you aint got it by now, you must be drunk, stupid or half asleep! "Play"!
These consoles let you PLAY games! Let you PLAY with your friends. Let you PLAY online! It's the common factor in it all!
So then we come to kids toys. What do children do with toys? They take them out of the virtually impossible to open packaging, the children make noises, swing the toy around a bit, bash it against something, make more noises. Does that sound familiar? Does that sound like PLAYing?
Yeppers! It's true! Console's are just toys! Ok, you could make the same comparison with videoplayers, but if you think about it, you don't play videos, the videoplayer plays the videos. Consoles allow you to play videogames.
So why is Edgy complaining?
Edgy's complaining because that kid on Newsround said it as if it were a bad point for the GameCube. Maybe that's how Nintendo wanted it to look. After all the gaming market is filling up with teenage players and Nintendo like to target all ages. Considering the younger gamers are the next generations of hardcore gamers, Nintendo are bound to try and suck them into the trap of being gaming addicts. I just think it's wrong that the fact it looks bright, and looks like a toy was used as a downer! After all, it's not what the console looks like, it's how the games play!
(On another note: He made the obvious point that the "controller had been totally redesigned", that you can't play N64, SNES, NES or any Game Boy titles on it, and the lesser obvious to the casual gamer it doesn't play DVD's, and it doesn't have internet access. Well that may be true for release, but what does he think the two modem ports are for? - I can see him becomming reviewer of the year!)
I really don't see what the harm in adding DVD is to a console, but it does push the price up and unfortunately the casual gaming lot have pounced on this all encompassing idea of having a console that could do other things than play games. Ok, so add two slots in the top and call it a toaster if it makes you happy, but I agree with Edgy that the main purpose of a console is clearly to play games.
The press have been hounded by Sony for so long with the fact that the PS2 was sold as the first console to play DVDs that Microsoft had to follow suit, Nintendo had no such qualms about releasing their console without the extra non-gaming ablilities and it remains to be seen whether it is a smart move financially for them or not.
What really gets me is that the same thing didn't really happen when the PSX and the Saturn came out. Hardly anyone said 'oooh and it plays all your CDs as well' Perhaps this was because CDs were a pretty established format and many people had a CD player in their house by then, but it's so obviously a marketing ploy above all other things.

Ha! Edgy watches newsround, and CBBC!
It's not that Nintendo fans are the gamers who haven't grown up while the others have, it's simply that Nintendo fans are the gamers who ADMIT they're still kids at heart while the "im reelly grown up honest! mario is for kids!!!" bunch are still in self denial!
That's right, ALL of us...
(This has been talked about in FOG Chat despite me already having a topic here....)
