Games-to-Film: Bogus Rumors
Setting the record straight on Silent Hill and Metal Gear.
April 09, 2002 - Aren't Web rumors fun? If you answered, "Well, no... not really," you get the gold star! A recent example of what I like to call "online rumor mill spinning-out-of-control insanity" occurred when a number of websites picked up on reports that feature films based on the games Silent Hill and Metal Gear were being developed. Late yesterday, we received an anonymous tip that the various rumors pertaining to the matter (originating from the horror genre fansite Bloody Disgusting) were entirely fictional.
The rumors claimed that New Line had scored the film rights to the projects from games-maker Konami and that a production company called Dark Aura Entertainment was working with them to develop the films. The site even conducted an interview with a representative claiming to be from the company – a company that doesn't actually seem to exist.
And while both New Line and Konami have a mutual appreciation for each other's work, sources at both companies have confirmed to us that these reports are untrue. So, in short, don't expect to see Silent Hill or Metal Gear on the big screen any time soon.
