This is currently on the go.

You end up with a screen demanding money to decrypt your now encrypted files and asking for cash.

It is too late if you get to this stage.

Before it is too late take sensible precautions. Do a backup of your important data and keep it off site. Do a backup at least weekly.

Load and run Malwarebytes as this will detect and remove Cryptolocker. Do it now. Although the free version works quite well, why not consider the paid version which covers 3 computers for about £20. A really good investment.

We are currently assisting a customer who has been infected with the Cryptolocker computer virus. The effect of this is that all their data files have been encrypted and they are now facing an on screen demand for money to decrypt them. It seems they opened an email which had an attachment on it and it has now affected all the computers on their network. Unfortunately their last backup is quite old and this event prompts us to remind you to take regular backups.

The company concerned is a large freight company and they have heard of five others with the same problem. The first sign of an issue was when all their emails bounced back as they had been blacklisted by their email server for sending out spam emails. This is the virus trying to replicate itself by sending itself out to all the email addresses on their system.

As the virus had been let in via an opened email their up-to-date antivirus program ignored it. The recovery of data is almost impossible, so it will mean restoring the last good backup and then retyping large amounts of data.

Within all the programs that we produce there is a backup option. Some include the ability to send a copy to our Cloud Server. We would suggest that at minimum you consider performing a backup at least once a week
