I found this posted over at the NTSC-UK forums, thought it would provoke some debate;

Capcom has announced through Enterbrain Co.'s Famitsu magazine that their upcoming port of "Capcom vs SNK 2" for the Nintendo GameCube, will be titled "Capcom vs SNK 2 EO" (Easy Operation).

As the title suggests, "Capcom vs SNK 2 EO" will be a port of Capcom vs SNK 2, with an easy control mode selectable as an option. The easy control mode is named GC-Ism, while the normal/arcade control mode is named AC-Ism.

The GC-Ism allows the analog C-stick to be used as a short cut to special moves. By tilting the stick to a direction, a special move (including supers) will automatically execute. Tilts to different directions offer different special moves. The strength of the attack can be varied by the strength(angle) of the tilt. In addition, the GC-Ism allows the L and R buttons to be used for convenient executions of punches and kicks- the stronger the press of the button, the stronger the attack. The GC-Ism also offers Auto-guard when in neutral position.

"Capcom vs SNK 2 EO" offers an arcade mode, vs mode, survival mode, training mode, and color edit mode. Production of the game is already complete, scheduled for release in July- price undetermined.

Now, I consider myself to be an avid 2D beat-em-up fan and yes, whilst this new fangled control methodology does make it more accessible to accomodate the control pad and players new to the series. I also feel it's stripping away the element that has seen players put numerous hours into mastering their character, fine tuning combos and counters, all the things that has made the 2D fighter genre what it is.

It could be considered elitist of me to think this way, but with the option now that certain moves have been made "easier" to perform due to the control pad design, has it dumbed the title down for greater accessbility and wider audience?

What do you think? Do you think that not just this title, but others are being dumbed down to appeal to a wider audience?

Correct.

Choice is important.

I'd sooner have a joypad designed for the platformers and shooters than one designed for the couple of fighters coming to the cube. Besides, there's an arcade stick available if you're really desperate...

As for GC-Ism, it'll be a neat feature for beginners/kids to start of with and get the hang of the controls. True experts have the choice to stick with AC-Ism, and I'll be doing just that.

It could have been worse...
We could have been FORCED to ALWAYS have the GC-Ism mode on.

Now THAT would be just insulting...

I really don't think the beat-em-up genre was top of Nintendo's list when they were designing the pad.

For some games, it's suited perfectly. This genre isn't one of them I don't think.

The game will rock anyway...

The chances are, you won't be able to use the C-Stick Super Moves with the AC-Ism, the GC-Ism is probably so crap players can play decent players and still challenge them...

It's a good idea, actually.

I've been saying that developers can use the L and R buttons for pressure gauged punches and kicks for ages... you don't need any other buttons for a fighting game... and if you wanted to, you could have A as a draw and put away weapon button. With the right ideas, you could make on hell of a fighting game with the 'Cube's pad!

I hope the L and R pressure hits and incorporated into Soul Calibur 2... then it would be perfect!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!112334

Agreed. One of the most satisfying things about the franchise, was honing your skills and combos with a certain fighter.

Whilst the GameCube's control-pad is comfortable, it's not without it's flaws - and this is one of them. I don't think Nintendo see the bigger picture sometimes.

I think with this game part of the problem is with the controller layout, it doesn't suit beat em up's a great deal, so they've changed the method to incorporate this, but with this, have dumbed it down.

I guess the new control method does take much of the skill away from it, which I don't suppose is really a good thing. But I suppose it does make it more accessable, but it all seems to come down to Nintendo's image of being a kids console. They think they need to dumb it down, when I'm sure there would be a welcoming audience for the game without this so called easy operation.
