But who can blame them?
Nintendo have got such tremendous opposition that they are not taking their decisions lightly, and hooking up to the net is an important decision that will take a while to fully decide upon. The only real problem Nintendo have got is the process of making a successful online game. As Shigsy once said, "it would take years to create fully functional online game", and even of they were able to kick-off their internet adventure shortly after GC's release in Europe, fans won't be able to play any Nintendo-based games for a long time. It'd have to resort to playing third-party games like Phantasy Star Online, etc, because they're already up & ready to go, but Nintendo insist on taking their time. But they may be worried about the whole affair, and maybe this cautiousness could lead them into being too late to join the online gaming network.
What I certainly don't think will be a problem for Nintendo is ideas. I certainly have a few, and I'd like to share them with you; and if I can come up with ideas, then Nintendo's army of design monkeys can too - so what is their problem? Read on to find out just some of the prospects of Nintendo going online...
LYLAT WARS.
You remembeer Lylat Wars? Well, it's a game in which you take the control of Fox McCloud and embark on a fantastic action adventure with your faithful buddies alongside you.
Now, it's a but like Phantasy Star Online in a way, because you can team up with people in a gang and battle other gangs from all around the world...except now you can join a team up to as big as 20 and take part in a battle of three armies. You are 1 of 20 people in the red army, and your army go up against the blue and yellow armies, and it's the army with the bigget amount of kills wins...simple, eh? But it's more advanced than that.
Obviously, they'd have to be some kind of colourful glow around each ship so that you can distinguish between each other. But what I think will be a great idea is, of course, the different modes you can have. There can be a straight-on deathmatch, a capture-the-something mode in which pure tactics will be the only way to ensure your army wins, and others such as capture the base, etc, just like the different modes you can find on Perfect Dark.
Now, I know what you're thinking: How can we communicate to each other to help each other in such modes as capture the flag and base? Well, the most obvious option would be to have little message come flashing up on the screen informing absolutely everyone in the game (all 60!) who has got the flag and who has captured whose base, but the more advanced option and idea is - and it's already been suggested by Microsoft for their Xbox's online future - headsets! How cool would it be to have a headset on in which you can talk to people from all over the world, or just your mates using this hands-free phone?! Maybe the headsets acn be customed to only talk to your mates, because you never know what language the bloke flying around you speaks. Wait! 'Ere comes another idea...
As you fly around at a high speed, you can see the whole space of the arena, and that means somehow having almost 60 ships on the screen at one time, all with no slowdown or graphical slip-ups. But as you lock onto an enemy or a team mate - as was the way with Lylat Wars - you could view their stats!; although, you'd have to be quick, because you're gonna wanna kill 'em before they relise they're being targeted. And so, when you do lock onto one, a little screen will appear next to their ship, and will show ho much health they have left, what nationality they are, what ranking in their army they are (if you lock onto someone and their ranking says 1st, then it'd be a good idea to kill him), and the nickname they have given themselves. Maybe, you could add a piccy, but I don't think that'll happen. Anywho, how absolutely smashing would that be, eh?!
What I haven't mentioned is the arenas. Like Lylat Wars, there'll be Earth arenas, space arenas, advanced mechanical planet arensa, and generall many different arenas varying in design to give extra depth into this promising game :-D
Unfortunately, this game, to run absolutely perfectly, would have to be designed for something possibly more advanced than even the PS3. Although, if things weer watered down a tad, maybe it could be performed on the 'Cube...maybe...
Being biased, I'd have to say that if this game were to come alive and hit our shelves sometime in the future, then it'd be in my 'Cube and ready to play before you can say: "Foxy!"
Now, this wouldn't be the only game to attract my attention. If some of the games already on the shelves for Nintendo's magical 'Cube were to be redesigned to play online, then they'd be a right hit, I can tell you:
Super Smash Bros. Melee, for example, Wouldn't be too hard to perform, would it? And if it were to go online, then such possibilities as tournaments and world rankings would be available, creating a right competitive game, that's for sure.
Pikmin is has already been mentioned by Shigsy himself, but I won't go into that. Many other games could easily be redesigned to go online, but whether they'd be worth it or not is the real question. I just can't stop marvelling at the prospects of Nintendo going online, and the gaming possibilities that it would bring if they did...
Let's hope Nintendo make a definite announcement soon, and release that darn broadband modem quick, because people like me would kill to experience just one of Nintendo's superb original games being playable online.
Gamecube's 3rd of May release is-a coming!
